BRIGID AND HERA CAUGHT UP with Domi and Zoo as the pair emerged from the elevator that led down to the water filtration plant.

“You look a fright,” Brigid said, noting Domi’s wet hair was now a sickly yellow cap hugging her skull.

“Should have seen me before my dip in the pool washed off all the blood,” Domi replied with a cock-eyed grin.

Brigid wrinkled her nose. “I’ll have to take your word for it.”

Hera interrupted the outlanders’ reunion. “We have activity in ventilation maintenance bay three. So far, though, it looks as if your strategy is working well, Zoo.”

The bearded man nodded. “The narrow, long corridors leading to each vent access looked like an ideal shooting gallery. There are no vital components that could be caught in the cross fire, so putting up a controlled barricade gives the Praetorians a fallback point to snipe at any intruders as if they were fish in a barrel.”

“Don’t forget about leaving level three unlocked,” Domi reminded Zoo. “That was nasty bait.” Zoo’s cheeks reddened above his beard. “I figure either the mutants learn their lesson from heavy losses, or we just continue to kill them off. Either way, even when they just make the attempt, one in four of them slips on the climb down.”

“Splat,” Domi announced, dropping one hand into the palm of the other with a loud clap. She seemed to remember something, taking the shine off of her glee.

“Anyone get the Praetorians from the bottom of the shaft?”

Zoo and Hera both glanced at the albino girl. Hera spoke up first. “It will be too dangerous opening the vent access to recover their bodies right now, darling. But we will retrieve them for a proper burial.”

Domi nodded. Zoo rested a beefy paw on her shoulder. “Right now, our priorities are the living. The dead have time to wait.”

Domi nodded at the man. “Understood.”

“With our situation secure, we should check on the progress of the others,” Brigid suggested. “Then let’s head back to the control center,” Hera said. “Though you say you have contact over your Commtact implants.”

Brigid nodded. “It’s one way that we can’t be disarmed, at least in terms of communications.” “What is the word from Kane and Grant?” Hera inquired.

“Are5 was injured during an attack on the swarm. Grant applied first aid to him, however. It was a bloody but superficial wound,” Brigid answered. “Kane and Artem15 are at the bottom of the Crack, but currently are split up. Kane’s making a stealth reconnaissance.”

Hera frowned as soon as Brigid mentioned Kane’s presence in the mile-deep cavern. “They had best be on their guard. With the Nephilim and the Tartarus mutants on the same side, that will be the most dangerous spot in New Olympus.”

“Well, Kane once said, in a moment of bravado, ‘The deadliest place in the world to you is Tuesday for me,’” Brigid confessed with a weak chuckle. Domi bumped her shoulder against Brigid’s arm, her ruby eyes cast upward to meet Brigid’s emerald-green gaze, a bridge of emotional support between the two women.
