KANE'S WHOLE UNIVERSE, as he lay strapped to the table, watt a red pulsation of pain.

He scarcely felt the jab into the inside of his left elbow. Instantly warmth began to flow outward from the site of the injection. Soothing, relaxing.

A fragment of memory floated to the surface of Kane's disordered brain. He smiled and opened his eyes. They made a cracking sound.

Vladek loomed above him, a black colossus. "Lucky I brought my chem interrogation kit from Cobaltville," the Mag said, his voice seeming to echo down a long tunnel. "Now we'll find out just what brings a traitor like you to Tanimbar"

"Not a chance, Vladek."

Vladek's single brow knotted like a hairy black caterpillar stung by a bee. "What the fuck are you talking about?"

"You were...racked up during chem interrogation training. That. . unfortunate accident."

The scar across Vladek's forehead flushed scarlet. "Don't talk about that!" he snapped, voice almost falsetto. Then, asserting control over himself with a visible spasm of will, continued in a deeper key, "I picked up what I need to know, have no fear, my friend."

"Bullshit. If you had you'd know about the... conditioning."

"What conditioning? What are you raving about?"

"We got a series of injections of standard Magistrate Division truth serum," Kane said, forcing hip split lips to form the words precisely. "Built... built up ... resistance."

The single eyebrow rose. "Oh, so? Well, we can take care of that."

He snapped his pale fingers. A little wizened cypress knot of torture tech, naked but for a grimy twist of loincloth, bobbed his shaved head and shuffled forward bearing a white plastic case marked with the nine-spoked-wheel-and-justice-scale emblem of the Magistrate Division. Vladek took forth a fresh injection unit, twisted the blue plastic sheath off the needle tip and smiled.

"We'll just give another dose to the one we hate most," He said.
