Chapter Six

A Mossad Substation

Tel Aviv, Israel

Nov 3, 1980

1230 Hours

Saul Greenbaum sat back in his chair in the intelligence center as the final reports came in. The Germans had been taken down, and The Box had lost no one. That, however, was cold comfort considering the loss of so many civilians. This operation was turning into Beirut all over again, but this time it was on their home turf and it may not have a happy ending.

“Colonel Ernst just brought Shin Bet on board,” Robert said as he dropped the phone back in the cradle.

“He did what?” Saul exclaimed as he sat bolt upright in his chair. “No one authorized that!”

“Technically, he doesn’t need authorization,” Mister Katz interjected, careful not to antagonize Saul. “His section is attached to us but not under our direct command. He’s still under the command of Colonel Meyer. If Meyer okayed it, he has execute authority all on his own.”

Saul took a breath and then let out a long exhale, calming himself down. He had known Cain Ernst for a very long time, ever since the man was a wet behind the ears Lieutenant going through selection for Sayeret Matkal. If Cain had brought Shin Bet on board, he had his reasons.

“They think Nadir is in Tel Aviv,” Robert continued. “He’s been communicating with Jericho Black using a handheld radio. Shin Bet has the best resources for locating a domestic threat. It makes sense.”

“Agreed,” Saul acquiesced.

“We’re leaving.”

Saul turned to the sound of Betz Felman’s voice and saw the Assistant Director standing in the doorway with Sergeant Avi Gallin. Both men were carrying field bags and long gun cases.

Saul wanted to say something inspiring, something about how they would find Nadir Fox in time, but even he didn’t believe that. Saul Greenbaum was no quitter, but he had also been in the war fighting and espionage business long enough to know that with no real viable leads on where Nadir was, it was very unlikely one would manifest and they could act on it in time.

It was increasingly likely that the Box Assistant Director was about to assassinate the Prime Minister. There may be no other way.

“I’ll see you this evening,” Saul said simply. Betz replied with a nod and then walked away.

“Are we going to warn the Americans?” Mister Katz asked.

“Even if we did, it wouldn’t matter. A threat like that, with so little time to react? Even if they believed it and sent some quick reaction force, we risk the bomber beating them to the punch. The Americans aren’t known for their mastery of the art of subtleties. And if it’s true that Nadir turned a Mossad agent and convinced him to do this, and the Americans identify him as such, we’ll be dealing with a whole different problem.”

“If only we had an agent in place in New York. Someone we could rely on to find this guy and pull the trigger on him before he realizes who he’s dealing with.”

“Yes, if only,” Saul said.
