Introduction

Times have certainly changed since the days when the ads in this book were published.

We, your authors, are savvy guys. We’re wild and crazy writers and editors; we like to think we’ve been around and that we’ve seen it all. (Or at least some of it all.)

Well, no.

Some of the ads in this book are the Merriam-Webster definition of egregious: “conspicuously bad; flagrant.”

We can also add surprising as an apropos adjective for some of what you’ll see in these pages, specifically the ones seen through 20/20 hindsight: OJ Simpson running from . . . something; Michael Jackson shilling a record player for children; pre-Caitlyn Bruce Jenner working out.

People who have seen some of these ads, peeking over our shoulders while we were working on this book, usually had two specific responses to seeing them:
