Hazel was my best friend, and maybe getting lunch with your best friend shouldn’t feel like such a treat, but I knew how busy her schedule was. Between everything with her job (she was a doctor, so there was a lot of work) and everything at her home (she had two young kids, so again, there was a lot of work), she didn’t have the time she used to have. But as much as I missed the way things used to be between the two of us, I also knew she was happy with the way her life was now and that she wouldn’t change it for the world. Obviously that counted for something.

Still, it did feel special to be able to get lunch with her. Especially since I expected that at any point our time could be cut short, that she could receive a call summoning her back to the hospital for the rest of the day. Theoretically, she was entitled to her lunch break, but I also knew that medical dramas, surgeries, and accidents didn’t wait for anyone to finish lunch.

Especially not a longer lunch with one’s best friend.

“I just wish we had more time to meet when you didn’t have to rush right back to work,” I complained, stirring my noodles around in my bowl.

“I know,” Hazel sighed. “And I still mean to have you over for dinner at some point. But things are just so crazy at the house right now. I’m lucky if I even manage to get a home-cooked meal on the table. I can’t even tell you how many frozen TV dinners there have been recently. But I just don’t have the energy or the time, even when it’s in everyone’s best interests to eat healthy.”

She paused, looking sheepish. “It’s bad that the kids eat better cafeteria food than what I can serve them, isn’t it?”

I laughed. “Maybe it’s time you hired a nanny,” I told her. “Or at least a cook and a maid. Someone to do all of the chores you hate.”

Hazel laughed. “Honestly, though, I would never have the time to interview them. I’m not sure I could find the right person.”

“Fair,” I admitted, but I was shaking my head. I knew that by the time I really entered my field, I was probably going to have similar difficulties. Too much time spent at the office and not enough time spent “keeping house.” But at the same time, I didn’t have a husband, and I definitely didn’t have kids. Or maybe that “definitely” belonged in the first part of the sentence.

It wasn’t that I didn’t want to get into a relationship with someone. I just didn’t have the time to look for someone. Even though I had tried some online dating sites, I never seemed to find anyone I clicked with. I didn’t know if I was looking in all the wrong places or what, but I had yet to find anyone that I wanted to make space in my life for.
