CHAPTER FORTY-SIX

“Keep pushing...keep pushing...”

Doc shoves the words out in an even rhythm. A two-word mantra he repeats one time after another as he paces the baseline of the gymnasium floor. Towel still draped around his neck, he occasionally runs either end of it over his face, never once breaking cadence.

Something that can’t be said for his young charges as they make their way from one end of the floor to the other.

Six teenagers in various states of hell. Charges who normally would be Kari Ma’s focus as she passes around the perimeter of the facility. An outside observer, there to see how they are holding up, measure their progress.

Interest that, for the time being, has been whittled to just a single member of the group. One of the youngest, and by far the smallest.

A boy with fawn brown hair matted to his forehead with sweat, the thick glasses he wears lightly steamed with perspiration.

“Doc!” Kari calls as she reaches the corner of the training area. A single word meant to both grab his attention and pull him her way.

A concession to her inability to move as quickly as she would like, the cane she is never without putting a permanent governor on her speed.

A message her friend picks up on instantly, ceasing his ongoing chant mid-sentence. Raising his whistle to his lips, he blows twice in order, bringing an instant end to the drill.

A finish that allows the students to stop where they are, every last one either bending at the waist and bracing against their knees or falling flat to the floor.

Most opting for the latter.

“What’s wrong?” Doc asks, pushing the question out before he is even all the way to her.

Ali’i keeping pace at her side, Kari waits until she is close enough to turn her back to the room. The start of a wall that Doc adds considerable width to as he slides in beside her, his chin tilted down her direction.

“The Kid? More cases?”

“Yes, and no,” she replies.

Starting with the incoming call a few minutes earlier, she shares what he was able to find. The brief discussion they had before being interrupted and the ensuing battle she was then privy to.

Close quarters combat that Kidman was easily prevailing in until an unknown second party entered.

And when that wasn’t enough - the newcomer getting his arm snapped for his trouble - the first one somehow produced a gun.

A sound that had made Kari’s entire chest clench as she heard it from thousands of miles away.

A reaction not unlike the tight draw of Doc’s face beside her.

“Oh, Jesus,” Doc mutters. “Is he...?”

“He’s okay,” Kari replies. “He got back on the phone afterward, said it was just a shoulder wound. With his healing, it’d be cleared up soon enough.”

Beside her, Doc arches an eyebrow. A look that again relays he is going through the exact sequence she did earlier, listening to it all live.

“Good thing Anika is there, at least.”

“I told him that, too,” Kari replies. “He said she’s got enough to deal with.
