Decky raised her head from the manuscript. She needed a break from all the brutality. Like Thora, she was trying to see the conflict from both sides. The Native Americans fell victim to the march of civilization, yet it seemed so cruel and heartless. Decky supposed all conquered cultures had their own horrible history. It did not make the manuscript any easier to read.
Decky picked up her cellphone and dialed Charlie’s number.
Charlie answered, “I was just coming to get you. It’s time to eat.”
“Oh, thank God. I thought you were going to keep me prisoner in here for days,” Decky said, with a tinge of whining in her tone.
“Think of it as a labor of love,” Charlie said, just before the door opened and she entered the RV, with the phone still pressed to her ear.
Decky broke into a smile when she saw her, and said into the phone, “I’ve been laboring. I’d like a down payment on the love part.”
Charlie set her phone on the table and granted Decky’s wish with a long, deep kiss. When she pulled her lips away, she asked, “Better now?”
Decky smiled and nodded that she was.
Charlie took her by the hand, dragging her toward the door. “Good. Now, come on and meet some more of the family.”
Decky froze, which jerked Charlie to a stop. “More of them? They are here already?”
“Haven’t you heard all the vehicles coming and going this afternoon?” Charlie asked.
“I guess not,” Decky answered. “I was too busy reading about bloody massacres to notice.”
“You’ll have to tell me all about it later, but if you want to eat, we need to go now, before all the food is gone.” Charlie walked over to the blinds on the big window behind the couch, pulling them up to expose what had been an empty grass lot leading down to the corral. Pop-up campers and tents covered every inch of grass, with a few more RVs parked down toward the barns.
“Damn!” Decky exclaimed. “It looks like a campground.”
Charlie lowered the blinds and turned to face Decky. “I told you, this is a big party. Come on, you’ll be fine. I’ve seen you work that southern charm.”
Decky did not move.
Charlie came closer, wrapping her arms around Decky’s waist, asking, “What’s the matter, honey?”
Decky thought a minute before answering. Her instincts were telling her something was coming in that manuscript, something more than a simple cross-dressing, Comanche warrior in the family tree. She had always trusted her instincts. This was not the time to change that policy.
“Charlie, I think your mother is going to have that conversation with you very soon, the one you’ve been avoiding. I also think her need to have it now is related to your brother Bobby’s absence. Thora’s story is going to play a pivotal part in this somehow.”
Charlie smiled up at Decky. “I see it coming, too, but I’ve come to terms with it. I’m forty years old. I’m way past defending my lifestyle to anyone. I’m pretty sure the only one it’s a hang up for is Bobby, and that’s Karen’s doing.
