Chapter 7

My connection to Brian’s memories ended there, and tears rolled down my cheeks as I opened my eyes to look up at him. Looking into his wide, fearful eyes, I understood why Risa had wanted me there. She did not know about the fire, but she wanted to protect the children from what that man was doing. I decided then and there that whatever it might do to the future, I would ensure they all escaped, no matter what.

Sniffling, I slowly withdrew my hands to wipe my tears away. I rose from my knees again and looked deeply into his eyes, whispering with determination, “Thank you for showing me. You are so courageous, and I’m proud of you. I won’t let them hurt you anymore. I have to go now, and I need to take Lu... Um, Jenny, with me, if that’s okay. She will help me bring down the big man, okay?”

Hope sparked in his eyes as he nodded and moved his arms out of Luna’s way. He did not smile but appeared on the verge of it as I stood and led Luna toward the door. I smiled sadly back at him just before we went through and out into the hallway, more sure and frightened than I had been.

Luna waddled beside me on her stiff, little dog legs, asking, “Okay, what happened? Who’s the big man?”

I shrugged as I led her down the hall, hoping I could follow my gift again to find out where I needed to go. “I don’t know exactly, but it was somebody with the power to fire people around here, I think.” Blinking back tears, I drew in a deep, ragged breath before I could whisper, “He’s accepting money to use the kids as guinea pigs. They’ve been getting medical testing, and at least one was ill.”

Luna halted at that information, then growled as she walked again with her head down. “Okay, when you find out who he is, give me five minutes alone with him. He’ll wish he was never born, the monster!”

I turned down the hall and toward the stairs, trying to figure out exactly what I was looking for. At that point, I was just walking around while trying to explain exactly what we knew. “If the child who fell ill brought too much attention to this place, and the big man was afraid of being found out, he probably started the fire to cover it all up.” I gasped. “He might even be here starting it right now.”

With a long sniff in the air, then a circle around the hall sniffing the floor, Luna reported, “I don’t smell anything yet. If it’s started, it can’t be too far along.”

Attempting to let that information calm me, I started again toward the first floor of the building. My heart was still not beating at its average speed, but with so much uncertainty and impending danger, that was to be expected. I just had to remain focused enough to do what I needed to do and learn what I needed to know before it was too late.
