CHAPTER TWENTY-THREE

Tessa looked around Jake and saw Antonio sitting there casually with a weapon in his hand. A quick glance told her he’d come alone. Antonio didn’t do much without one of his men close by. She’d always thought Antonio to be a little insecure, but maybe the man was just smart.

“What are you doing here?” Jake asked.

“Very simple, I’ve come to kill you both. Do, come in.”

Jake pushed her back in the hall and slammed the door. He grabbed her wrist and they ran for the stairwell. She screamed as Antonio ran after them.

Jake shoved her to the left. “Stay against the wall, this way he can’t hit you.”

Several shots rang out, ricocheting off the steel railing. They managed to get down the stairs and out into the lobby before they walked right into Pablo and Felipe. They were both armed and soon Antonio joined them.

“Get them out of here.”

Felipe grabbed her arm and Pablo took Jake. Tessa knew if she allowed them to leave the hotel, they didn’t stand a chance. As they reached the center of the hotel, she stopped and screamed as loud as she could. “Help me. I’m being kidnapped. Call the police.”

People screamed and ran for cover. The horrified desk clerks scrambled into action. One young girl picked up the phone, another ran toward them, while a middle aged woman smacked Pablo in the back with her suitcase. “Help her, she’s an American.”

Chaos broke out and the lobby filled with staff and guests trying to help her and Jake. In the confusion, they made a run for the front door. Even Antonio wouldn’t try to shoot them in front of twenty people.

Outside, they grabbed a cab and headed out of town. Inside the cab, Tessa practically sat on Jake’s lap, shaking. If Antonio was going to be so bold, Tessa decided maybe it was time to leave the island with her life instead of riddled with bullets.

“Jake, I don’t think there is a safe place on the island for us.”

“We’ll find a hideout. It will just take time. I’m telling you, I’m sick of Antonio showing up every time we turn around.”

“Maybe you should call your boss and ask him to send help?”

He reared back and stared at her. “What do you mean?”

“Help.” She grabbed his shirt. “We need extra help.”

“No, we don’t. I’ll get us out of this.”

“You’re sure?” She looked out the back window of the small cab. “Because back there, I kind of saved our butts.”

“You did. I won’t deny that.”

“There is a private beach not far. I’ve avoided it because it’s so remote, but at this point, we need to lay low for a while until I figure out how Antonio is able to be wherever we show up.”

The cab stopped beside the road and Tessa got out and looked around. The landscape was beautiful, but there wasn’t a house in sight.

On the way Jake had instructed the cab driver to stop by a store for them to purchase a few supplies then he’d paid the guy a small fortune to forget he drove them anywhere.
