My retired PwC partner friend from Dallas turned out to be a big help in the campaign. She introduced me to as many as fifty people, all of whom were Republicans and many of whom became campaign contributors. She held a fund-raiser in Dallas that was well attended and thoroughly enjoyable. As a former tax partner, she offered technical advice on how to improve the comptroller’s office, much of which I tried to use on the campaign trail.

I greatly appreciated her enthusiastic support, not least because it was a clear indication that rational Republicans are simply not going to tolerate being controlled by the irrational hard Right of their party forever. I’ve always believed we should do what’s necessary to make our society better, not worse, and I’ve always believed that it takes great skills to achieve this important objective without overtaxing or overregulating the system. I had abandoned the Republican Party because their politicians were far more likely to pander to the militantly anti-everything right wing of their party than to provide enlightened leadership. The reaction of these hardened retired PwC partners and their spouses to me that evening was proof that I was on to something. We as Democrats just need to keep working to get our message out.
