Chapter Seven

Even as he spoke, Chay ripped the smart watch from his wrist and threw it to the ground. But the soft, rubbery sole of his shoe was made for grasping ladder rungs and slippery floors, not crushing hardened devices, and it bounced off.

“Burning Cortana failed,” Six reported evenly.

“Then shut down all the generators except those in the bunker,” Chay snapped.

“Main generators: Off. Failed to load backup generator protocols.”

Stupid. Stupid, stupid, stupid. He’d meant to switch over fully to his Number Six systems—with the spook shop taken, it was the only rational choice. But they’d been monsters—they hadn’t hacked his network, they’d destroyed all the equipment they could reach. How was he to know that they’d infected the system with themselves?

Only the dummy terminals and some local machines were in the spook shop proper. The servers were locked several floors away, so all the creatures’ smashing hadn’t harmed the network at all. The network which was connected to every system on the internet and more than a few that weren’t supposed to be, that would let the invaders spill out into everyone and everything that touched it….

Those thoughts and words came in a flash, in the time that it took Tara to make a squawk of protest behind him. Chay was already reaching for the gun at his hip, wrenching it from its holster and raising it as Seamus moved for the first time since they had entered the room, lifting his head to reveal eyes that were like windows to a void, their whites consumed in inky darkness.

Seamus opened his mouth, and the sound that came out should not have been possible from any human throat—a roar and a scream all at once as the facility shook under yet another blow.

Chay fired. With his heart breaking, he fired into the great bear shifter’s body, remembering every joke, every look, every conversation he’d had with the man who had all but adopted him as another brother. Chay pulled the trigger again and again as Seamus rushed forward, heedless of the bullets, until his legs gave out under the loss of blood and he pitched forward at Chay’s feet.

“You shot him!” Tara shouted. “You shot him, you shot him!”

He grabbed her wrist and pulled her off the hospital bed and back onto her feet. “He was one of them.”

“How?” she demanded. “When?”

“I don’t know,” Chay said.

Dr. Herrera burst out of his office, and Chay swung his gun to cover him before he realized that the doctor’s eyes had not changed and dropped his gun to his side.

“It happened before you arrived,” Harveth said from his bed. “The instant I saw it, I thought I was a dead man, but apparently, it wanted to find out what you knew.”

And now, if it could communicate with the others—and Chay had no reason to think that it couldn’t—it knew as much as they did.

Almost as much as they did, because he’d never said aloud their plan to gather the other panther shifters….

Dr. Herrera was swearing virulently in rapid Spanish.
