Bryce

Claire’s fingers toyed with the hair on my chest as we lay in bed. “Did you mean it when you said you loved me or was that just a heat-of-the-moment deal?”

“I meant every word. I’ve been in love with you for as long as I can remember,” I said, trying my best to reassure her. “I’d never lie to you, Claire.”

“But you’ve been with other girls. Didn’t you love any of them?” she asked.

“No, none of them were you. And I’m sure it’s not as many as you think.” I could count them on one hand. Feeble attempts to rid my mind of Claire. Each time, the guilt consumed me. It wasn’t fair to those girls that they were only a means of escape.

She then asked the question I knew was coming yet still dreaded. “How many?” Mostly because I wished the answer were zero.

“Two.”

“Oh.” Her single-word reply had me wondering if I’d made a mistake in answering. “Bryce, I’ve been in love with you for so long. Never in a million years did I think I’d have a chance. I know the out-of-bounds rule and that I’m the little sister. Plus, I figured you’d already be dating the hottest girl here.”

“Claire, you are worth more than your weight in gold. How could you think that about yourself?” It killed me she felt this way. She was everything to me. My life was so dull without her. School, practice, gym, games. Repeat. That was my life. Sure, it’d still be that way, but now the girl waiting in the stands was there for me and I loved it.

She released a heavy sigh. “Sorry, I didn’t mean to bring down the mood on such a beautiful night.”

I tilted her chin up and pressed my lips to hers. “Claire, you’re my world.” She settled down and laid her head on my shoulder. Soon after, I smiled as she lightly snored.

I wish I could’ve joined her, but my mind was a mess as I considered how to fix things between Eli and me. I didn’t want Claire to know how deeply his words and reaction had cut me. We were best friends and Eli of all people should know my feelings for Claire weren’t a joke, not something I’d take lightly. Still, we both needed to pull our heads out of our asses and fix the riff that threatened our friendship. Sometime later, I finally managed to doze off.

Claire’s stirring woke me up the next morning. “Good morning, beautiful,” I muttered, kissing the top of her head.

“Wow.” She stretched then wiped her eyes. “What time is it?”

“No clue.” I pulled my arm from beneath her. Having not moved it all night, it had fallen asleep and felt like a voodoo doll being stabbed right now. “Ouch.”

“Oh, crap. You should’ve moved me,” Claire said.

“It’s all good. Besides, you were right where you were supposed to be. Asleep in my arms. I just need to shake it out.” I sat up, doing just that.

“Well, I
