Chapter Sixteen

Now What?

ON MONDAY MORNING Marlee plunked the headphones on her head and hit play to start the next statistics lesson. She, accidentally on purpose, left the volume muted, though. Marlee hoped this time Kate and Rita would be impressed with her new clothes, and she wanted to hear every word. On the way from science to math, Lisa and Julie said they liked the outfit she had on. Even her teammate Johnna gave her the thumbs up on her new duds when they passed in the hallway. How could her friends not like her new clothes? Before going home on Sunday, Susie put together a few outfits from the clothes Marlee had borrowed and from the clothes Sam had gotten her. With Susie helping her out, Marlee couldn’t miss.

The black jeans fit her really well, but Susie’s sweater was a little too femmy for Marlee’s taste. She didn’t quite fill it out on top like Susie did, but the gold necklace and earrings Susie had given her for their anniversary looked really good with it. Maybe if she wore the earrings and the necklace every day, people would know she was a girl, and then when her hair grew out, no one would ever call her ‘sir’ again. Man, she couldn’t wait for that day.

Although Marlee had tried to hide them in the back of her closet, Susie found the stupid boots that were too small. Susie seemed surprised that Marlee had such “cool boots” as she’d called them. Marlee had to fess up that the boots didn’t fit her right, and then the damn broke as she confessed everything about not fitting in and her stupid trip to the Southbridge Boutique. It felt good to get it off her conscience to somebody safe like Susie. Susie said all the right comforting words in all the right places and even suggested that the boots might fit Sam. She set them aside to take with her when she left. Perfect. That way the money Marlee had spent wouldn’t be wasted, and it might be a good way to thank Sam for all the new clothes. Marlee even got up the nerve to show Susie the disastrous paisley shirt. She cringed waiting for Susie’s reaction. Marlee was shocked when Susie not only liked the shirt, but wanted to borrow it. Maybe Marlee’s sense of fashion wasn’t as far off as she’d thought.

Marlee wrote down the probability formulas that flashed on the screen every so often so it would seem like she was focused on the math. Even without worrying what Kate and Rita thought about her clothes, learning a new math lesson would have been nearly impossible that morning because she kept thinking about her grandfather coming home from the hospital later that day. She hoped his heart had kept up a strong and steady rhythm throughout the night. Maybe he’d even be there when she got home from school.

Marlee noticed movement in Mrs. Stratton’s office, so she focused on the silent math movie playing on her screen.
