Putin was reinaugurated as president on May 7, so disgruntled citizens began holding round-the-clock “folk celebrations” in downtown Moscow as a way of protesting without obtaining permission from the authorities. Two downtown subway stations, Arbatskaya and Kropotkinskaya, which the newly elected president’s motorcade would pass, were closed “for security reasons.” All streets and alleys leading to the Kremlin were cordoned off by the police early in the morning and cleared of people. Police dispersed people involved in the folk celebrations, too. People caught wearing white ribbons, a symbol of the opposition, were arrested immediately.
