Chapter 19

Kenzie

“What do you mean the signal just disappeared?” Sloan says irritably, holding open the trailer door, his body blocking me from coming inside.

“I’m saying it’s gone.” I take a deep breath, trying to keep the panic out of my voice. “She went to town, went home, and then for some reason she drove up into the mountains. Then the signal just went blank. Just like what happened with my uncle’s birds.”

“Calm down, it’s probably just a glitch,” he says, frowning. “But we should check it out just in case. Ryan is resting but I’ll have him look into it as soon as he’s up. I’m sure it will be fine. Or maybe she gave the necklace to someone else.”

I roll my eyes at him. “Who would she give it to? Sloan, I’m worried.”

His irritated expression softens and he takes a few steps down the stairs, letting the door shut behind him.

“Look, Kenz.” He puts a hand softly on my shoulder, kneading the base of my neck a few times in a way that instantly makes the knots of tension fall away. “I know that you feel sorry for this girl, and think she might hold the answers to this puzzle, but we barely know her. Giving her that necklace was probably crossing a line in the first place, but we don’t need to obsess over her every move. We don’t owe her anything.”

“But she’s just a kid,” I say, hurt that he doesn’t even seem to care that she might be missing. “And she’s been through so much. I just want to help her.”

“Because you’re a good person. Just don’t take it too far. My duty is to Ryan first. But I promise as soon as he wakes up I’ll advise him on the situation.”

“But she could be anywhere by then,” I argue, but stop when he gives me that signature Sloan glare. “Fine. If you won’t help me then I’ll find somebody who can.”

“Kenzie, stop acting like a child. It will only be an hour or so. You can wait that long.”

“A child?” I knock his hand away, glaring at him with growing anger. “Is that seriously what you think?”

“No.” He rubs a hand across his face. “Well, only when you act like one.”

“Oh, well, don’t worry then. I don’t need a babysitter. I’ll be just fine on my own.”

“Come on, Kenzie…”

I shoot my middle finger at him over my shoulder and keep walking.

Uncle Jack’s work tent is full when I stomp inside, still simmering from my encounter with Sloan. Everyone is either bustling excitedly around the monitors or packing our fieldwork gear into the hard plastic totes.

“What’s happening?” I ask, pausing in the doorway.

“The Vaux’s swift,” Uncle Jack says excitedly, pulling me into the tent and spinning me in a little circle. “A handful of trackers just went back online out of the blue. They’re now about twenty miles from where they first reappeared. We’re about to head out to see if we can spot any.”

“Wow, really? I’ll come with you.
