Chapter 19

The Big City, Thursday, May 28

Jeff got the kids to school on time. He called Sandy and told her she was going to hear from Bob and she had better learn how to apologize. He packed for his trip, called his mom to let her know he was coming up Saturday morning, and headed for work.

Diane had another fist full of messages when he walked in the office. None of them involved real estate. Beverly Solomon had told him he would be famous for about a week and then everyone would forget him. It had been almost a week and he was still a hot topic. From what he could tell watching TV last night, the letters were still a major topic of conversation in the country and the world. He was still getting requests for interviews and television appearances. It was getting to be more than he could handle.

He found Solomon’s number and called it. She answered immediately, “Hi, Jeff. I wondered when you were going to call.”

“I need some help.”

“What can I do for you?”

“First, are you in D.C. or in Africa somewhere?”

“No, I am in my office at Foggy Bottom.”

“Great. Are you going to be around D.C. Monday and Tuesday?”

“Yes. That is the plan so far.”

“If I stopped in the Capital, would you live up to your promise to have dinner with me, say either day, or both?”

“I will put you in my calendar for next Monday.”

“Perfect. Now, for the help I need. It seems that my fifteen-minutes of fame is lasting longer than we anticipated. This morning when I came into the office, I had more than thirty messages from media trying to get me to come in for interviews. Do you have anyone at State that could help me with press relations and help me make decisions on whom I should see? If no one at State can do it, could you recommend someone I could hire?”

“Let me make a call and get back to you. Are you going to be available for a while?”

“About an hour. I have to catch a flight to New York. I am going to be on a network morning show tomorrow.”

“I hope they are paying for your flight and expenses.”

“Yes. They are flying me up coach, I upgraded to business. They are going to put me up at the Lowes.”

“You do need help. They should be flying you up first-class and putting you up in a four-star. Okay, I’ll call you right back.”

Jeff spent the next twenty minutes taking all the messages from the last two days and separating them into categories: radio, television, newspaper, magazine, cable networks, religious programming, etc. There were a couple from blogs. He didn’t really know what a blog was so he just put them to the side. His cell phone rang. He looked at the message on the front and saw the call was from Beverly. “Hey, Beverly, thanks for calling back so quickly.”

“Hi, Jeff, no one at State is going to be able to help you.
