I could tell it was still dark out, but my alarm hadn’t gone off yet. I didn’t want to check the time, or I probably wouldn’t be able to get back to sleep for the next few minutes before the alarm would buzz. Especially since I still hadn’t slept off the strange feeling just behind my eyes. I lay in bed for ten more minutes, but the alarm still didn’t ring. Sighing, I opened my eyes and grabbed the phone by my pillow. Hitting the side button, the phone lit up to show 2:14am.

“Huh?” I said, then winced, thinking of Claire in her bed across the room. What the- I grabbed my laptop, and flipping it open I confirmed the time. You’ve got to be kidding me, I thought. I rolled over and tried to sleep again, but after an hour of tossing and turning, I figured I might as well get up and read some of my chemistry chapters.

Glancing back at my phone, I saw the time was now 2:20am. I nearly swore, but caught myself from speaking out loud and waking Claire. There’s no way that only six minutes passed. I opened my laptop again, and it unhelpfully read 2:21am. I counted to sixty silently in my mind. One one-thousand. Two one-thousand. Three one-thousand. At sixty, I checked the time again and neither had changed. Long minutes later, spent staring at the phone, I finally saw the time change to 2:21am. What is going on?

Abandoning the thought of studying, I changed into a sports bra and a fitted green shirt, keeping my red basketball shorts on. I slipped into my running shoes, glad I’d been using them around campus so I didn’t have to dig them out from under the bed while Claire slept a couple meters away. I checked my phone one last time before slipping it into a drawstring backpack I’d picked up as swag from the orientation, noticing the bright display still showing 2:21am.

I almost headed for the elevator before remembering to take the stairs. Once outside the building, I started running, setting a brisk pace. Hardly anyone was out this late, and my shoes sounded loud against the pavement. I smelled smoke, and the stench of burnt rubber. My mind replayed the weirdness of the last couple of days, the tear gas, meeting a famous football star, the chem lab accident, and how sick I’d been feeling. And how much I ate, and how little I slept, I thought.

After several minutes, I approached a bus stop, noticing a man sitting on the lone bench. The man didn’t seem to notice me, so I slowed down to rest, and sat on the low retaining wall a ways off from the bus stop, so the buses wouldn’t pull over for me. My head pounded slightly with the same odd feeling as before. Not pain, just a strange sensation. As I idly wondered about the nighttime campus bus schedule, I looked up to see a car parked in the middle of the road.
