Chapter 11

Organ Symphony

Wednesday—almost two days earlier

Ethan Ward was thirty-nine and soon to reach that threshold age where life supposedly begins. He’d been working as an agent on the World Health Investigation Team for eight years and had only now been promoted as senior agent, a position he’d hungered after for ages. But now he found the responsibility daunting. His two colleagues—Reed Carter and Akemi Kuroda—looked to him for guidance and decisions. Yet he felt like a fish out of water. Córdoba was so far removed from his home patch of Charleston, South Carolina. The heat might be similar, which he was comfortable with, but everything else seemed alien. His one big drawback was that he didn’t speak Spanish fluently and relied on Akemi and Reed when putting questions to the locals. Sure, his tall height made him dominate most Spaniards. He was also conscious that he was over-weight but couldn’t see how he could correct that any time soon: the food here was too darned tasty! He marveled at Akemi; she was so slight of frame yet had a voracious appetite. Maybe it was to do with her being twenty. Food didn’t yet deposit fat on her bones. Thinking of bones, he’d really like to jump hers. Hey, he told himself, act professional. She was alluring, though, with those big eyes enhanced by her mauve eye-shadow.

The lead that Reed had picked up had been slight, but as it was their only break to date, Ethan had authorized round-the-clock surveillance. “We’ll change watch at 10pm each night,” Ethan declared.

Late last night Ethan reported to Geneva HQ that they were tracking a suspect who went by the moniker of Daigashi. Akemi pointed out that it probably wasn’t his real name, since one meaning pointed to it being a deputy-boss in the Japanese underworld.

“How do you know that?” Reed had asked her in a disparaging tone.

“I studied criminology.” Her voice was gentle yet Ethan detected firmness beneath the surface which he noted Reed was loath to engage. Reed hadn’t commented further.

Today it was Reed’s turn; he’d been on watch since relieving Ethan last night. Now, Ethan and Akemi waited in their three-star hotel, the Córdoba Califa.

“It is so tedious, all this waiting,” Akemi had remarked to Ethan on her cellphone. “I had hoped this job would be more exciting!”

“It will have its moments, I assure you,” he replied. Then, added, “Wait!” His adrenaline started flowing when he received the phone call from Reed. “Akemi, switch to conference call mode.

“Go ahead, Reed,” Ethan said.

“Daigashi’s on the move, people, and the intel is good. He’s carrying a box.”

“What kind of box?” Akemi asked.

“The kind you transport human organs in,” Reed replied.

A mite flippant, but Ethan let it go.

“Ethan, what’s our move?” Akemi asked.

“Keep him in sight, Reed,” Ethan said. “Follow and keep us apprised of your direction. We’ll join you shortly,” Ethan promised.
