Chapter Twenty

Bridger nodded that he understood. “Severed head, or dungeon core. I got it,” he told Sir Aryn.

“Good,” the Elder Ranger said. Then the man drew an inkpot and quill from the canvas sack tied to his belt and held them out for Bridger so that he could sign the contract.

And Bridger did so, signing the document and a duplicate of the document that Sir Aryn had presumably also made while breakfasting beside the orc ranger’s corpse. This way, both Bridger and Sir Aryn could keep a copy of the agreement in case there was any dispute about it between them in the future.

Seeing this bargain struck was the last straw for Grisham Olek. The haughty fur trapper rolled his eyes again and shook his head. Then he stormed off into the forest, saying that he needed to take a shit.

Both Bridger and Sir Aryn shared a smile at that. And even Xan’thea laughed a little, although her eyes were still fixed on Bridger like she had a thousand things that she wanted to say to him.

Then the Elder Ranger shook Bridger’s hand again and said, “One last thing, my friend, to speed your journey.” He took a silver ring set with an amethyst-colored gemstone from the sack that was tied to his belt and handed it to Bridger.

It will save you the three-day ride to get there and the three-day ride back. And so hopefully we can put this whole evil affair with The Tower behind us as soon as possible.”

“Much obliged,” Bridger told the Elder Ranger.

“No need to thank me yet,” the man said. “Ascending The Tower won’t be easy. I know that.”

“Tell me something, Sir Aryn,” Bridger asked the man then, “how did you manage to kill two full-grown orcs when you were just a young boy?”

“Through sheer fury,” the Elder Ranger said, a faraway look coming into his eyes, “through sheer fury, son. I pulled the very spear that burst her heart from my mother’s chest and shoved it through the back of the orc that had killed her. I was so small then, so lanky, the creature barely even noticed me there. But the pure rage that welled up inside me from watching my parents get slaughtered like that right in front of my eyes gave me the strength to drive the stone tip of that crude spear right through the orc’s spine.”

Bridger nodded at that. He understood that kind of rage quite intimately. The two men looked into each other’s eyes, sharing a moment. Then Bridger said, “Go on. Tell me all of it, if you’d like to.”

“The creature toppled to the ground after I speared it,” Sir Aryn said, “and I leapt onto its back in a flash. I drew the wicked little obsidian dagger that it
