Chapter 8

“Amelia, I’m going to need you to explain racing to me,” Hannah said on their way to Mackenzie’s race.

Amelia shrugged. “The cars go in circles, and when the man waves the flag with the cute checkered print, it's over.”

“That’s all you got?” Hannah asked with a laugh.

Amelia wasn’t sure what else she wanted. She thought that was a pretty good explanation. She tried her best to remember what else Mackenzie had told her. “The race car Mackenzie drives doesn’t have a starter. That’s why it gets pushed out on the track.” She sighed when she thought about Mackenzie explaining it, and then her mind drifted to Mackenzie in her racing uniform. “I also know that the suit Mackenzie wears when she races is sexy as hell. It’s blue and brings out her eyes, and when she’s working on her car, she unzips it and pulls it down halfway, and she’s always wearing a white T-shirt underneath that shows off her muscles. Also, when she takes off her helmet and pushes her hair back, it’s literally what wet dreams are made of.”

Hannah laughed once again. “You’re totally whipped.”

Amelia watched as Cecelia squeezed Hannah’s hand. “Don’t make fun of her. I think it’s really sweet.”

“Yeah, and you’re totally whipped too, Miss I’m-just-into-hookups,” Sarah joked.

“You’re just jealous that the woman who is a monster in bed, also wakes up and makes me breakfast.”

Cecelia elbowed Hannah in the side, her face red with embarrassment but a smile still present. “Babe, you can’t say stuff like that.”

Kiera leaned forward from the back seat and put a hand on Hannah’s shoulder. “Plus, we all know by the time you wake up that she’s actually making you lunch, not breakfast.”

Cecelia chuckled. “That’s very true.”

Amelia lost track of the conversation because she was so excited to see Mackenzie. Unfortunately, this track was set up differently and their rules stated that anyone who wasn’t part of the race team couldn’t be in the pit area, so they had to sit in the stands and wait until the end of the night to see Mackenzie. It was worth it though since she knew she was going to get the chance to fall asleep in Mackenzie’s arms.

By the time the finals for Mackenzie’s race started, Amelia was a ball of nerves. She wanted Mackenzie to do well, but she also just wanted her to be safe. The closer Mackenzie’s car came to the other cars, the more nervous she became. It certainly didn’t help that Mackenzie was making her way up to the front of the pack and had to get really close to each car she passed. She didn’t even realize her eyes were closed until she felt an elbow in her side.

Ryann pointed toward the track. “Eyes open. Your girl is fighting for first place right now.”

Amelia watched as Mackenzie’s car was side-by-side with another car. She saw a white flag waved, which she had learned meant there was one lap to go. Now, she couldn’t take her eyes off the track.
