Kai
âKai,â Jami whisper softly and presses a soft kiss to my neck. âI know that isnât true.â
How can she say that? Sheâs obviously saying that because thatâs what the papers said, but they donât know the truth. Iâm the only one who does. Although sheâs probably just consoling me. Iâm sure back in the day she never read the papers.
âItâs true. Everyone knows it. Why do you think Theoâ¦â Ugh, I hate to even use his name. ââ¦calls me BM.â
âI donât know what that means. I wasnât sure I should ask.â
âBuddy murderer.â
âOhmigod. I am so sorry, Kai.â She tugs on me a bit, urging me to turn and face her and I do.
âYou probably want to go back to your room.â Look at me pushing her away again, because I know itâs for her own good. But if I push her away, will she go back to douche bag? Thatâs certainly not for her own good and I donât want that for her. But I canât forget she has an agenda in this whole bet too.
âNo, I donât want to go,â she answers quietly. âUnless you really want me to and then I will.â
âNo,â I say shaking my head, but Iâm not even sure if Iâm doing the right thing. Lately, because of her, Iâve been thinking with my heart and not my head. âI donât want you to go.â Honestly, this is the first time the house feels less empty. She brings a warmth to it, and I like it too much. Fuck.
We both settle on our pillows, our hands touching, our fingers intertwined. She goes very quiet, her eyes moving over my face, in a warm, caring way that pummels my heart until itâs nothing but a soft, mushy ball. I am feeling things for this woman, and itâs the last thing I want to do. Jesus, nothing good can come from it.
âIâm here if you want to talk,â she whispers quietly. âIf you donât want to talk and want to just lay here in silence for a while, thatâs okay too.â
With her free hand she pulls my blankets up again after they slip from my shoulders. She keeps her palm on my arm, and while I need the touching to stopâIâm getting in deep hereâI need it to continue just as much.
âThere was alcohol involved,â I begin, pinching my eyes shut as Coopâs happy smiling face comes into view.
âYou were drinking and driving?â she asks, her brow furrowing, but she keeps her hand on my arm.
âYes, but no.â I pull one hand free and put it on her hip, shifting a little closer.
âI donât understand,â she says gently, clearly confused from my confusing answer. âYou either were or you werenât.â
âThereâs a fine line, right?â I snort out.
âYou were the one driving though?â she straight up asks.
âYes.â I look down, stare at the way my fingers are fisting the blankets at her hip as old memories scrape my insides raw. âWe went to a party in his car. He drove, and was supposed to be the designated driver.
