In 2019 a quarter of a million people in China died in traffic accidents, making road accidents the main cause of death for people aged 15 to 45 years.26 Liability and the high probability of injury explain why many operations in China provide bus transport for employees.

A number of employees rode electric scooters to work. They were cheap and fast, and the plant provided free charging stations.

Since scooters didn’t require licenses, many riders ignored traffic rules. One evening, while weaving in and out of traffic on his way home from work, an employee crashed. His employer ended up paying the hospital bill. Not long after, free charging points were removed and bus services were provided.
