Basically, a blast furnace is a shaft furnace (if it is analyzed as a chemical reactor, it is a plug flow reactor) with a refractory lining of variable thickness and quality, covered with a carbon steel sheet (15 mm in thickness) and where it is possible to distinguish the following elements (Fig. 6.3):

Throat: zone for charging the burden [ferric charge + reductant (coke)]. The blast furnace gases circulate through the throat of the furnace toward the dry and wet cleaning systems. The temperature in the throat is 200–250 °C, the pressure is around 1.5 atm (there are blast furnaces in Russia and other countries that operate with bigger excesses of pressure), and the approximate composition of the gas is that indicated in Table 6.1 (Babich et al. 2008, page 153).Table 6.1Composition of the blast furnace gas
