Working laundry wouldn’t be a hardship. Brooke understood what it took to keep PT uniforms clean and the ACU ones starched and pressed. The slump of Haugh’s and Xavier’s shoulders indicated the deep disappointment at their postponed holiday. Traveling on Christmas Eve wasn’t ideal, but they could still get home.

Entering their room, Haugh flipped the light on.

Another bag was on Brooke’s bunk. She hung up her coat. Sitting, she removed her boots and set them aside. They’d need some serious cleaning tonight before heading to laundry in the morning.

She pulled out the card, identical to all the others with the simple words Merry Christmas on the front.

“We’ve had a grueling day. You’d better read it aloud,” Xavier said as she flopped on her bunk.

“Fine. Here goes. ‘Sweeter than chocolate you are to me, although your lips I’ve never tasted. Your mouth speaks encouragement to all, and the love is never wasted.’” Ohhh, was this what she thought it was? Excitement bubbled up inside of her.

“Hurry! Open it!” Haugh insisted.

Brooke grasped the box and with a small shake she heard movement and a slight paper sound. She grinned as she ripped it open. It was a gift box from Sees Chocolates a favorite from California—toffee-ettes, Victorian toffee, and white mint truffles. She tossed one in her mouth and took a bite. Oh, someone did know the way to her heart!

“Are you going to share?” Haugh asked with a puppy-dog gaze.

“Sure. I’m warning you these are some of the best chocolates you’ll ever taste. And not a word to the rest of the barracks. I’m not sharing with everyone.” They sat there each savoring the delicious treat. She’d try to make these last for sure. Her roommates left, and she scurried to find a place to hide her gift. The camera case tucked up high in the closet was ideal for now.

Who was doing this? After a long grueling day, she was almost too tired to think. She went to get a shower, dried her hair, and curled up on her bunk with her new journal and pen.

Dear Lord,

It was a challenging day to say the least, and the entire company was punished. I guess that’s why You let the sin of Adam and Eve fall on all of us, because we are all guilty to some degree of the same sin of thinking we know better than You. Pride. Self-absorbed humans hate to look beyond themselves. Yet You called us as Your followers to be an army for You, doing our best with Your enabling, to surrender our will to Your purpose and plan. Often, I lose sight of that, and I confess my own naval-gazing tendencies. Even as I’m here, it is about the whole working toward a cause, a mission.

And my primary mission is to worship and adore You and submit and follow You, wherever, whenever, however You choose. As hard as it is to do this in the Army, I’ve not trained with as much fervor toward obeying You.
