Carter’s guard pushed him through the door back into the wooden cube with a parting shot. “This isn’t over yet, G-man.” A locking bar slammed into place and there was the rattle of a padlock before silence fell.

“How was it?” Jerry croaked through battered lips. “I see they didn’t beat yez.”

“They didn’t need to.” Carter replied. “In fact, they didn’t need to beat you either. I think they just did that for fun.”

He told them what had happened, including the revelations about the discovery of his family’s location.

“Well, I suppose ye co-operated.”

“I did. I’m not proud of it, but there are no secrets worth my family’s safety.”

“Don’t worry yersel’. I’d have done the exact same thing.”

“But I’m pretty sure now that this has nothing to do with The Troubles. At least, not directly. I’m pretty sure that whoever this lot are, they’re in it for themselves and not for any cause.”

“What makes ye think that?”

Again, Carter explained. “Then they asked me about Loyalist businesses that might be being used for money laundering. If they were Republicans, I could understand them wanting to take money off Loyalists, but he’d already admitted that they had robbed the amusement arcade being used by the Provos. So, either they are some sort of third force, or they’re in it for themselves.”

“I can see your reasoning. I’d draw the same conclusions.”

“And I’m pretty sure I know who’s behind it.” Carter suppressed a smile of triumph.

“Oh, how did yez work that out?”

“Have you ever heard of the Foyle Valley Fishing Club?”

“Can’t say I have. Probably some local outfit and I’m from Belfast.”

“I didn’t think you would be familiar with them. But who do we know who is a keen fisherman?”

“I’m not sure I know … hang on, do you mean Mayfly? The tout1 we were sent to find?”

“None other. I saw a badge on the jacket of the guard who was behind me which had the name of the fishing club on it.”

Jerry looked thoughtful. “That puts a different complexion on what we saw at Mayfly’s house.”

Carter nodded agreement. “We saw what we were meant to see. Our conclusion was that he had been grabbed by someone, probably the Provos. If the Provos went into the house looking for him, they’d have drawn the same conclusion, but they would know it wasn’t them that had done the snatching. He couldn’t have been picked up by the police or Army, because when they turn up at the door it’s like a three ring circus arriving in town. Someone would have been bound to have noticed. But the Provos would maybe think he had been picked up by a Loyalist group.

I think Mayfly knew he was on thin ice with the Provos, so he’s gone into business for himself. Probably trying to raise enough money to start a new life somewhere else; America maybe, or Australia. I think he knew that if he stopped communicating, someone would be sent to look for him and Belfast duly obliged.
