Chapter 14
Cindy
The last, I donât know how many days, have been all but a blur. Faces coming in and out of focus, food and water being offered to me, like Iâm some kind of animal, and medicine being forced on me. If I sound miserable, itâs because I am. Being in and out of consciousness sucks. I donât even know what day it is or how long Iâve been out of commission. Iâve heard voices behind my head and I think Iâve responded somewhat. The only thing Iâm coherent of right now is Kelly telling me I have to take a bath because weâre going to the doctor.
âI love you, honey, but you stink.â She giggles. âCome on. Iâll help you.â
I undress, peeling my rank clothes off, and the second my toe touches the bath water, I start to feel human again. âYour fever broke finally.â Kelly says.
âI figured. I donât feel like Iâm in a daze anymore.â
Kelly gets a large cup from the kitchen and helps bathe me. My hair is so long and matted that I canât do it myself. âYouâre lucky Iâm doing this. Jimmy offered to give you a bath.â
âOh, God, Iâd die!â I bark, listening to my voice crack with pending strength again. Iâm hoarse, but at least I have some volume again.
âDonât worry. He wouldnât leave your side, but I wouldnât let him give you a bath.â Kelly advises. âHe stayed with you every night since youâve been sick, you know.â
âKell, Iâve been so out of it, I wouldnât have known if Mother Theresa was sleeping with me.â
âIâm surprised he slept in the bed with you.â She says, and I can tell that sheâs digging for intel.
âAre you?â I volley back.
âWell, yes. Are you guys an item?â
âGod, youâre so nineteen fifties!â I chuckle, but that brings on a cough, so I stifle myself.
âWell, you know what I mean. Heâs your boss, isnât he?â
âI think you and I both know that heâs more than my boss, Kell.â
âDid you sleep with him?â
âIn a sleeping sense, yes.â I admit. âThe night before I got sick, we slept on the couch in the recording studio together.â I lift a hand. âClothes on though. And we didnât like make out or anything. We just held each other. It was nice.â
âWell, I think youâve got yourself a keeper, if you feel anything for him, Cindy. He was here as much as I was. I donât think the man has slept in a week.â
âHeâs a sweetheart.â
âHe quit smoking.â
My eyes bulge. âReally?â
She nods. âHe told me himself. I havenât smelled a thing on him all week. He hasnât gone outside or anything while heâs been here.â She smiles. âAnd youâre right, he does like to hug. Every time he came or went, he gave me a hug.â She lifts a brow. âHell, you want to trade Dave?â
I chuckle. âHeâs not mine to trade.â
âOh, I think he is.â
âWould you stop? Heâs myâ¦boss.â
âHe loves you.â
âNo, he doesnât.â
âYou love him.â
I look at her. She lifts a finger.
