I wore a little vintage dress that I’d bought from a shop that sold pre–loved clothes. The gold sequins had kept their shimmer and the cream chiffon and drop–waisted style hinted at a bygone era. I’d altered it to fit me as it was one size too large. Worth every stitch. I wore my hair pinned up in an antique barrette. High heeled shoes in a metallic tone completed the look. The dress had short sleeves and I wore a cream wool shrug to keep my shoulders warm, and wrapped up in my red wool coat. It was the warmest coat I had.

A taxi dropped me off at the bar restaurant that had an upmarket decor. Finbar was waiting at the front entrance, chatting to one of the security guys. He looked luscious in a dark grey suit and matching shirt and tie. He hurried over and paid the taxi driver and then linked my arm through his and escorted me inside.

I slipped my coat off as we sat down at our table.

‘Lovely dress,’ Finbar said. ‘You look beautiful, Phred.’

I smiled and blushed. I didn’t look beautiful, but it was nice to feel the compliment lift my confidence. I glanced around. No leggy brunette ex–dalliances within the vicinity.

He was still eyeing the dress.

‘I bought it secondhand and made a few alterations to make it fit me. I like to sew. I enjoy dressmaking.’

He seemed to calculate giving me extra points for the dressmaking. I wasn’t sure why.

‘Sewing and home baking,’ Finbar said, as if testing out whether the combination appealed to him and then giving me the biggest thumbs up. ‘And journalism and writing. An interesting mix of talents you’ve got there. A career woman and a home maker. Has any man ever tempted you to settle down with him?’

‘No. I’ve been busy building my career, working at the newspaper.’

‘You need to make time for romance,’ he said.

‘I’ve had my moments, but they’ve never lasted. I’ve put romance on ice to concentrate on work. Romance doesn’t pay the bills.’

‘I’d pay the bills if you were with me. You wouldn’t have to worry about money.’

‘I like my independence. If I’d relied on past boyfriends, I’d have been left with nothing when they’d gone.’

‘I’m different.’

‘Are you?’

‘Yes, I’d want you to be independent if that was your choice. But I’d give you money to make your financial situation a lot easier. I’d pay the bills. You’d want for nothing.’

‘This is a very serious conversation, Finbar, and we haven’t even ordered dinner.’

‘I’ve never been a man to hold back when he sees something he wants.’

I smiled and felt the colour rise in my cheeks.

‘In fact, if it was left to me, I’d skip dinner and take you home with me now, carry you into the bedroom and lock the doors for the entire weekend.’

I pretended that such thoughts hadn’t entered my mind, when they had.

He took a deep breath. ‘Look, I am different. I’m a fighter. I go after what I want. I liked you the minute I saw you.
