Chapter 4

Luther Grant was working in the back office of the club he owned in San Antonio. It was an upscale place, mostly legit, and his three sons helped him to run everything. Plus he had two brothers, Mike and Tom, who assisted as well. It was a family business and he wished he had the opportunity to locate Destiny earlier and to bring her into the business as well. He hadn’t though. He was in a bad place five years ago. Heading toward self-destruction or jail. He pulled through though, and why? Because of Melinda. He met her three years ago and it was instant. The desire, the connection and attraction. It wasn’t toxic like what his ex-wife, Masey, had been and what eventually put her into self-destruction and jail. He finalized the divorce and within the year he met Melinda. Ten years younger, beautiful, smart, and she stole his heart, and set him straight. She saved his life. For the next three years he pulled his shit together, got his sons out of trouble they were heading in and revamped the family. He had held a bit of a grudge against Destiny because she had been so strong, so intent on a better life, a more legit life that she had left. Took off at twenty years old and was on her own.

He felt the tears in his eyes. When she called him out of the blue that early morning, his instincts and reactions were instant. His baby girl needed him and this was an opportunity to show her what he was capable of and how much he changed.

Thank God he kept in contact with Justin Hanson. Their time together in the military was tough, but their bond was forever. Even when Luther left the Marine Corps and got into criminal shit, Justin remained friends with him. It was Luther that cut the ties a bit, and in those ten years so much had changed. In fifteen even more, but they kept in contact and Luther pretended to be a good man, a good father and husband.

He rubbed his jaw as he looked at the text from his buddy Kyle. These fucking men who were part of that club in New Orleans were involved in many illegal activities. The biggest being a drug circuit that ran along the bayou. Omar Perrine, Kansas and King were big wigs. How his daughter wound up in the middle of their shit show was beyond him. She was a bartender at King’s club. His sources did reveal that she stayed out of trouble, didn’t have any boyfriends and that she acquired a bachelor’s degree attending college during the day and online and achieved her degree in marketing and promotions. She was a college grad and he didn’t even know. Hadn’t been there to help pay for it, to celebrate her achievement and it seemed like no one was. He sent her off, forced her out in order for her to not get caught up in activities like her brothers had.
