Chapter Twelve

The next week, Kay dreaded the day Mrs Sullivan would ask them to draw self-portraits. It was fitting that it was on a day where he felt like shit and was hung over from a party on Sunday. He rarely got sick but today he was sluggish and Trent had told him that he looked pale. One glance in the mirror Mrs Sullivan had provided for everyone confirmed that

He scrubbed his palm over his face and bit down on a groan. He was so tired of these elementary art exercises. He picked up his pencil and began with his soft, sloping jawline. Most artists would have made a grid after that to make sure the proportions of the face would be correct but Kay skipped that step.

He went right into it, beginning with his arched eyebrows and down to his nose, which was average sized—not too big, not too small, nothing special. Moving on to his mouth, he sketched it into a small, idle smile, his full bottom lip casting a shadow.

Fleshing out the boxy angles of his chin, he then turned his attention to his eyes. Today they were a darker brown than normal but he wasn't worrying about colors as he began to duplicate the rounded shape of his eyelids and the dark lashes that surrounded them. He gave some depth to his irises, highlighting the gleam coming off his dark pupils. After sketching in some of the shadows that his eyelids cast, he moved onto his hair, which was swept haphazardly across his forehead. He replicated the style and drew as far down as the arch of his pale throat before he put the pencil down.

"Finished, Kay?" Mrs Sullivan asked.

Kay nodded, and as he expected, she came over to check on his work.

"I still need to do some shadows around the eyes and lips but it's pretty much done," Kay said.

Johnny had been hard at work on his drawing, brows casting shadows over his dark blue eyes, but he glanced up from his own portrait and let out a low, impressed whistle.

"Impressive," Mrs Sullivan said to Kay before moving onto another student who'd finished.

Kay nodded in thanks, going back to finishing the shadows he'd skipped over when he'd first drawn it. He poked his tongue out between his lips thoughtfully as he did so. Mid-stroke, he glanced up and noticed Johnny watching him. He shot him a small smile, both shy and accomplished when Johnny not only grinned back but winked at him. His heart skipped a beat.

Glancing at his reflection, Kay realized his cheeks weren't pale anymore. In fact, they were a ruddy pink from the flush that'd come over them. Flustered, he brushed his hair back from his face and tried to focus back on his drawing but he couldn't. It felt nice to be noticed, even if he didn't think it meant anything.

Johnny was the cool, older guy. He could get anyone.
