CHAPTER EIGHT

RESSURRECTION

‘I just couldn’t believe the state of him. He was always such a big lad – but now there was nothing left of him. He was like a skeleton.’

Pat Lawson

I was in a beautiful room – clean, white and fresh. Two huge fans were blowing out the purest air you could ever imagine. Two women, dressed in white were moving round, constantly cleaning, constantly smiling. As I sat on the white settee watching them, they came over, dusted me down and cleaned me too. I certainly needed it.

Everything went dark and I saw myself as a wax figure. I had no neck or proper legs and I was covered with words like swearing, violence, deceit, burglary and the faces of everyone I’d hurt in the past. Suddenly, the figure was engulfed by flames and the words and faces started dripping off and disappearing. As the figure melted away, a large hand lifted me up and lowered me gently into a huge, endless pool full of the most amazingly clean and pure water.

Meanwhile, outside my head, the nurses and doctors who had been desperately trying to save me were preparing to turn off my life support. There was nothing more they could do.

‘Gram’s dead!’ The message spread quickly round Middlesbrough the night my friends found me unconscious. Someone spotted me being carried to the ambulance in what appeared to be a body bag. In fact, I was wrapped in a large, zip-up foil blanket to raise my body temperature.

I was rushed to intensive care at South Cleveland Hospital (now the James Cook University Hospital), where I was diagnosed with hypothermia, pneumonia, septicaemia, severe malnutrition, severe dehydration and my liver was starting to shut down. I’d slipped into a coma and, five days later, my kidneys started failing, which meant my brain was starting to swell. They couldn’t find the right antibiotic for the septicaemia; I had eight blood transfusions to try and flush it out, but there was no response.

My family were contacted. I later discovered my mam was reluctant to come at first, until she was told how serious it was. She was shocked when she saw the state I was in. She had both dreaded and expected this moment for years.

‘I’m sorry, Mrs Lawson, but your son isn’t responding to treatment. As his only legal guardian, we are advising you to allow us to switch off his life support. There’s nothing more we can do for him.’

So now even the doctors had given up. But she hadn’t. Despite everything I’d done and how much I’d hurt her, I was still her son. She told them: ‘Look, I want you to keep trying, at least until you’ve got more proof that he’s not responding.’

Two hours later, they came back. It wasn’t good news.

‘We’ve tried some more tests on him and he’s not responding,’ they said. ‘There’s no oxygen in his blood and it’s only the machine that’s keeping him breathing now. Even if he was going to wake up, he would be paralysed from the neck down.
