CHAPTER 17

“Stop it. Both of you,” I said, looking across the living room of my house at Sarah Jane and Kyle. They had been staring at me like that for the better part of ten minutes now, and I knew why.

“I’m just worried about you,” Sarah Jane said, looking over at Kyle. “We both are.”

It had been a day since that awful moment in the country club. The sun had set and rose after Taylor was stabbed and Colin, the man responsible for it, shot and killed himself right in front of me. In that time, Taylor had thankfully become stable. He wouldn’t die from these wounds, but he would have to heal for a while, and that meant he was off the table in terms of continuing this endeavor. Though I hadn’t spoken to him since he passed out in the courtyard yesterday, I had to imagine he hated that. He had never been the type to want to push work off on someone else, and even though this involved people he swore he either didn’t like or didn’t care about, I had a feeling all of this was far more important to him than he was letting on.

“You don’t need to be worried about me,” I said. “You need to be spending time with your newborn.”

“DennyKat is just fine. I left her forty five minutes ago, and she’s safe with Eden.”

“Eden’s not qualified to take care of a newborn,” I said.

“She’s a labor and delivery nurse. She’s literally licensed to take care of newborns,” my daughter shot back.

“I still don’t like it,” I said. “And I’m not sold on this DennyKat thing.”

“Stop trying to change the subject,” Sarah Jane said. “You went through something traumatic. You need to talk to someone about it. Luckily, we have a therapist right here.” Once again, she motioned to Kyle.

“He’s not a therapist. He’s my friend,” I replied.

“I’m both,” Kyle answered.

“Well, you shouldn’t be,” I said. “I’ve seen enough television to know that therapists have no business treating people they have personal relationships with.”

“Then talk to me personally,” Kyle answered. “You say I’m your friend. Talk to me as a friend. We just want to know what’s going on in your head, Jack.”

“I’m fine,” I answered.

“You’re not fine,” he said. “You’ve been moping around this house ever since you got back from the country club.”

“I’m worried,” I replied. “Is that what you want to hear? I’m worried about Taylor and I’m worried about this case.”

“No, Jack,” he said, shaking his head. “That’s not what I want to hear, because it’s a lie. Your daughter and I both deserve the truth.”

“It’s not a lie,” I replied.

“It is!” Sarah Jane said. Her voice was louder and her emotions were less controlled than Kyle’s, which made sense. She was younger, and her temperament was far more combustible than my friend’s had ever been. “I’ve seen you worried about cases my entire life. I grew up watching you deal with crap like that, and you’ve never reacted like this, and Taylor is going to be fine.
