CHAPTER 17

“They gave you an office already?” I asked, following Kyle into a room at the far right side of the precinct’s main room. Cameron had come in right before me, and I shot my friend a look that was half impressed and half incredulous as he shut the door behind us.

“No. As far as I can tell, this office isn’t in use at the moment. I was told I could use it while I worked on this,” he said. “In fact, I’m not technically employed with Key Biscayne outside of this case. It’s kind of a one off.”

“For now,” I said. He shot me a look back. “What? You’re very good at your job. Once these folks find that out, they’re definitely going to want to keep you around. That’s all I’m saying.”

“I appreciate the vote of confidence, but now’s not really the time for it. We have a lot to discuss,” Kyle said.

“We sure do. Starting with what you thought about Kenny Broadmain,” Cameron said. She had already taken a seat at one of the two chairs that sat in front of the desk. Instinctively, I sat at the other one, leaving the desk for Kyle. While it wasn’t officially his, it seemed to make the most sense. Kyle walked around and sat down across from us, plopping a notepad he’d been carrying on the desk in front of him.

“I think he’s a dirtbag, basically,” Kyle said.

“Is that your clinical opinion?” I asked, smirking a bit at my friend.

“It’s my personal observation,” he answered. “I grew up with six brothers. Our father was in and out of prison our entire lives for doing crap he wasn’t supposed to do. Most of my brothers took after the old man. I know what a dirtbag looks like.”

“As interesting as that perspective might be, it’s not why we called you here, Dr. Jenkins,” Cameron said. “We want to know whether or not you think Kenny Broadmain is capable of killing people in the way this Enigma killer has.

“Call me Kyle, and I’m aware of that,” Kyle said. “But I've been with that man for an hour. It’s not exactly enough time to make a formal diagnosis.”

“It seems like enough time to give us your initial opinion,” Cameron said. “Besides, it was my understanding that you’ve had access to the Enigma files for a few days now.”

I looked over at my friend. It had been a few days since I left him at the bar,a few days since Cliff turned up in my kitchen, and I got involved with this serial killer case with the police. I had been busy. That much was true, but I had seen Kyle more than once since all of this started. He hadn’t told me anything about working with the police. Of course, as I stared at my friend and thought about the secret I was keeping from him (about the Coastal Crime Unit), it occurred to me that I didn’t exactly have any room to talk.
