CHAPTER THREE
Peggyâs Pie Shop, Haunted Harbor, Maine, New England, United States
The café was just as charming as the other parts of the town Paris had seen. There were cute china plates with pictures of birds, rabbits, or other woodland creatures hanging on the wall. All the tables were covered in hand-knitted tablecloths, and fresh flowers sat in the center in little vases.
âWhat are you all doing in here?â a woman with short red hair who resembled Lucille Ball and was wearing a waitress outfit asked.
Paris glanced behind them at the door theyâd come through and pointed at the sign. âIt says that youâre open. Arenât you?â
âOf course I am,â the woman replied, leaning to the side to look through the big picture window. âThe tour ship hasnât come in yet. Where you from?â
âWeâre not from around here,â Rudolf answered, sliding into a booth by the window with a view and grabbing a menu, not taking the hint they werenât welcome.
âClearly,â the woman said, her hands now on her hips. âSo what are you playing at? Why are you in here?â
âTo get pie!â Rudolf exclaimed, his eyes wide as he took in the options.
âBut youâre not from around here,â the woman said sternly.
âIâm sensing that you donât serve tourists,â Sherlock Holmes began. âIs that correct?â
âItâs not that I donât,â the woman told him. âItâs they donât come in here.â
âWhy?â Paris asked.
The woman lifted an eyebrow, studying her leather jacket and pants, then Sherlock Holmes in his tweed coat and King Rudolf in his silk tunic and pants. âWhere did you all come from?â
âThe interstateâ¦â Paris said, drawing out the words.
The woman shook her head. âThatâs closed. The only way in here is through the harbor. Why are you lying?â
âWhy does no one come here?â Paris asked.
âBecause itâs haunted,â the woman said severely.
Paris had so many questions she didnât even know where to begin. Based on the quizzical expression on Sherlockâs face, he did too.
âSo why did you lie to me?â the woman continued. âThe only way in here is through magic or the harbor. One is allowed. The other isnât. So tell me, did you break the captainâs rules?â She leaned forward and smiled for the first time. âBecause if you did, Iâm naming a pie after you.â
