Chapter Sixteen

Hazel

I stood just outside the door of the ballroom, peering anxiously in as Martina and Lindsey approached the dessert table. First, they’d break the chocolate heart with the cake server, take the chocolates out, and then use a knife to cut the actual cake. No matter how they got into the heart, it would be fine—the hard part of getting it safely onto the cake was over—but I wanted it to be perfect and aesthetically pleasing.

“It’s going to look great,” Audrey whispered to me, sensing how high-strung I was. “It’s supposed to shatter, right? That’s the point.”

“Yeah, but what if it’s gotten so warm that it just kind of goes ‘moosh’ when they hit it?” I whispered back nervously. Audrey snickered softly and I sent her an unamused look, but I couldn’t help softening. “Okay, I know I’m being ridiculous.”

“You’ve already proven how skilled you are as a confectioner,” Audrey soothed me. “Nobody’s going to think you failed no matter how your chocolate sounds.”

I started to giggle, but a sudden commotion behind us made me stop and look over my shoulder. A couple of resort staff and some people dressed for the wedding were having a loud conversation with somebody in the front vestibule.

“Yes, I have an invitation!” a woman’s imperious voice echoed down the hall. “Not that I should need one! I’m here to get my woman back!”

“A wedding crasher?” Audrey asked, turning to get a better look. “For real? This wedding doesn’t need any more drama.”

I wasn’t sure what she meant by that statement, but I didn’t have time to think about it. I knew that voice, and it made a cold shiver run down my back.

“Dorothy?” I murmured in disbelief. I started toward the vestibule while one of the wedding party requested she show her invitation.

It was her, I realized with a feeling of dread trickling down my scalp. Dorothy was here in an evening gown, one I’d never had the opportunity to see her wear. She wore sparkly barrettes in her hair. The moment she looked past the people blocking her and saw me, melodramatic relief flooded her expression.

“Hazel! Baby! I’m here!”

She says that like it’s a good thing! I hurried toward her even though all I wanted was to run in the other direction.

“I’m going to get you back!” Dorothy called, and I gaped at her. What the hell was she talking about, ‘get me back’?

I heard applause from the ballroom and I picked up my pace. It didn’t matter what she was doing here! I needed to stop her from causing a commotion right now!

Dorothy pushed through the couple of people trying to stop her and dashed toward me. Her face turned furious, though, when she looked past me. I turned around too; Audrey was on my heels. A burst of panic flashed through my mind when I realized what Dorothy must mean.

She flung out her arm and pointed a finger at Audrey in a way I’d only ever seen in reality TV or soap operas.
