Chapter Sixteen
Hazel
I stood just outside the door of the ballroom, peering anxiously in as Martina and Lindsey approached the dessert table. First, theyâd break the chocolate heart with the cake server, take the chocolates out, and then use a knife to cut the actual cake. No matter how they got into the heart, it would be fineâthe hard part of getting it safely onto the cake was overâbut I wanted it to be perfect and aesthetically pleasing.
âItâs going to look great,â Audrey whispered to me, sensing how high-strung I was. âItâs supposed to shatter, right? Thatâs the point.â
âYeah, but what if itâs gotten so warm that it just kind of goes âmooshâ when they hit it?â I whispered back nervously. Audrey snickered softly and I sent her an unamused look, but I couldnât help softening. âOkay, I know Iâm being ridiculous.â
âYouâve already proven how skilled you are as a confectioner,â Audrey soothed me. âNobodyâs going to think you failed no matter how your chocolate sounds.â
I started to giggle, but a sudden commotion behind us made me stop and look over my shoulder. A couple of resort staff and some people dressed for the wedding were having a loud conversation with somebody in the front vestibule.
âYes, I have an invitation!â a womanâs imperious voice echoed down the hall. âNot that I should need one! Iâm here to get my woman back!â
âA wedding crasher?â Audrey asked, turning to get a better look. âFor real? This wedding doesnât need any more drama.â
I wasnât sure what she meant by that statement, but I didnât have time to think about it. I knew that voice, and it made a cold shiver run down my back.
âDorothy?â I murmured in disbelief. I started toward the vestibule while one of the wedding party requested she show her invitation.
It was her, I realized with a feeling of dread trickling down my scalp. Dorothy was here in an evening gown, one Iâd never had the opportunity to see her wear. She wore sparkly barrettes in her hair. The moment she looked past the people blocking her and saw me, melodramatic relief flooded her expression.
âHazel! Baby! Iâm here!â
She says that like itâs a good thing! I hurried toward her even though all I wanted was to run in the other direction.
âIâm going to get you back!â Dorothy called, and I gaped at her. What the hell was she talking about, âget me backâ?
I heard applause from the ballroom and I picked up my pace. It didnât matter what she was doing here! I needed to stop her from causing a commotion right now!
Dorothy pushed through the couple of people trying to stop her and dashed toward me. Her face turned furious, though, when she looked past me. I turned around too; Audrey was on my heels. A burst of panic flashed through my mind when I realized what Dorothy must mean.
She flung out her arm and pointed a finger at Audrey in a way Iâd only ever seen in reality TV or soap operas.
