Chapter 4

Maxine bit her lip as she eyed her reflection in the mirror. The dress was scarlet. That was the first problem. The second was it was strapless.

Maxine had never worn a strapless dress before. Wearing one now, she felt…exposed. And shockingly sexy! The dress was of much higher quality than anything she’d ever owned. There wasn’t a price tag, but the designer label told her that the dress had cost…well, she couldn’t imagine how much. But it was a lot!

So she felt exposed and…sexy and shocked at how comfortable a dress like this could be. Shouldn’t it pinch? Shouldn’t it feel as if it were about to hit the floor?

What would Dash think of her in this dress? Maxine turned to see herself from the side, then from the back. Good grief, was that really her? She was so glamorous! Maxine hadn’t felt glamorous ever in her life! She’d felt pretty when she…okay, she hadn’t felt pretty in a long time. Probably not since before her parents had been killed. Back when she’d worked at her appearance with makeup and hair products.

Sighing, Maxine turned away from the mirror, shaking her head. She wasn’t here to feel glamorous. Marni needed to be warned, she needed help. A murder charge was hanging over her sister’s head and Maxine was admiring herself in the mirror! How vain was that?

The heels were surprisingly comfortable, given the fact that she hadn’t worn anything with heels since…high school? Maybe even longer than that.

She’d pulled her hair back into a simple French twist. And makeup? She’d added a touch of mascara and lipstick, but that was all she had brought in her travel case. She rarely wore makeup, using it only for important meetings. Tonight’s event…a gala wasn’t a meeting, but it was important. If Dash thought that Marni might be there, then Maxine would summon the courage to attend.

A knock on the door reminded her that time was continuing onward. It was show time, in more ways than one.

She opened the door, holding her breath as she waited for Dash to tell her how ridiculous she looked. Maxine certainly felt ridiculous. No, not ridiculous. She felt like a phony! She never wore clothes like this. First of all, she’d never waste money on something that she couldn’t wear again. A red, satin dress, strapless to boot, wasn’t a practical outfit in anyone’s estimation.

“Wow!” was the only word she heard.

Opening her eyes…she hadn’t realized that she’d closed them…and found a wide-eyed Dash standing in front of her. He swept his eyes over the red dress and matching heels. Correction, he was surveying her figure in the red dress and heels!

Her skin heated under the weight of his gaze. She felt a stirring deep down inside of her that she hadn’t felt in…ever! Oh, she’d been interested in boys back in high school. But none of those teenage boys had ever incited such…tingly, excited sensations inside of her!

High school. Wow! That seemed so long ago! It was ancient history, in her mind.
