The Non-Duck

The rest of the week Paul stayed in from recess. On Tuesday he helped Ms. Berkowitz arrange the items on the nature table. On Wednesday he cleaned all the blackboards and beat out the erasers. On Thursday he built an airplane out of plastic connecting blocks. On Friday he designed a racing car out of those blocks—a car with huge wheels and a driver’s seat that swiveled in a full circle. That way, if the car turned over, it could keep on going and the driver could keep on driving because the seat would just flip over, too. It was neat.

Paul kept himself so busy, he hardly had any time at all to miss Stephen.

And each night he went into his parents’ bedroom and walked around, looking at himself in their tall mirror. He didn’t waddle like a duck. Did he?
