Chapter 8

Ivy woke to the sound of a knock on her door. She glanced at the clock on the nightstand. It read six thirty.

"What is it with these people?" Ivy rolled out of bed and threw open the door.

Duncan stood there in casual tan slacks and a white shirt. His jaw dropped suddenly, and she scowled.

"Yes? Can I help you?" Ivy sighed. "Listen. I know we have to start early. No problem. But if you could manage a word or two, that would be awesome." She pulled her brown hair back and looked for a ponytail holder. "Damn." Duncan extended his closed hand toward her. Then he turned it over and opened it. A beautiful gold circle lay in the palm of his hand.

"Thanks." Ivy pulled her hair up and studied him. "Have we reached the speaking part of our program?"

"You look lovely this morning." Duncan's gaze traveled from her face to her toes.

The slow realization of her state of undress sank in. She glanced down at herself and then back up at Duncan. Her body flushed hotly.

"I'm sorry." Ivy was afraid to turn around. The negligee not only dropped low in the front, it rode high in the back. She crab-walked over to the nearest dresser and pulled a shirt out quickly. She hurriedly threw it over her head and walked back to the door.

"Everybody's already down there?" Ivy glanced around frantically. "Shit!" She grabbed a pair of shorts out of a drawer and slid them on. She slid her fingers through her hair quickly and put it back up. "Okay." Ivy looked up at Duncan.

"You going to tell me the next time you're going to spring an early wake-up call on me?"

His green eyes gleamed. "Not a chance."

Ivy looked at the crew of misfits at the small table. Amazing how adversity brought people together. She sat down next to Adam and made a plate of sausage and eggs. A maid brought in a cup of soda, and Ivy thanked her profusely. Rose waited until Ivy finished eating. "Better?"

"Much." Ivy glanced at Adam. He wrote furiously in one of his notebooks. She stilled his hand with her own. "You have a game plan, don't you?"

"Yes." Adam glanced around at the other people at the table. "First I want to research other healing plants or animals. Maybe we can figure out how to cure the king through other means." His brown eyes shined intelligently behind his glass frames. He pushed them up without a 157

thought and continued. "Then I'll see if I can find some type of potion or elixir that slows down aging.
