CHAPTER TEN

Wednesday 22nd October 1975

The blue Hillman Hunter pulled into the side of the road in Kilburn and stopped. A man wearing a smart suit and carrying a raincoat opened the door and got in. The driver, a long-haired man wearing a black leather jacket nodded a greeting and then concentrated hard as he looked into the rear-view mirror to try to find a break in the heavy traffic, to pull out into the road. He drove in silence for a while until they were halted by traffic lights then he turned and addressed the passenger, whom Scottie knew as Johnson, in a thick Belfast accent.

“I don’t like this. It’s too risky.”

There was a long silence during which the lights changed and the driver continued the journey.

Johnson slapped his thigh and then in an exasperated tone said, “Risky or not we have got to get at the stuff, it cost a bundle, and the new campaign can’t start until our cell is properly equipped. The Commander has made it very plain that we have to clear up the mess your friends have got us into. Don’t ever try that sort of idiocy again or it will be the worse for you. First you lose the gear you had in the boat and now we have no idea where Declan stashed the other stuff.”

“He was a good quartermaster. He was just being careful.”

“That’s as maybe, but you are the cell’s armourer, he should have let you know what he was about. You will have to act as quartermaster and armourer until we get a replacement.”

“Is Seamus to be the bomber?”

“Yeah, and Dermot will replace Brian as back-up bomber. As intelligence officer, the commander has put me in charge of the campaign.” replied Johnson.

“We are a bit short staffed with only four in the cell instead of five. This kidnapping is an unfortunate diversion. What about the girl? We can’t go on hiding her forever.”

“She’s the only hold we have over her father, wherever he may be.”

“Where do you think he is?”

“Well I tried the number I had for him, but his missus told me he didn’t live there anymore. She said they were divorced. At least she told us where he worked.”

“Did you go to the house address to check it out?”

“Yeah, there was a blue panda car parked across the road from it. The fuzz have got the house under surveillance. What the hell went wrong when you followed him?” asked Johnson tetchily.

“I really thought I had him cornered at an address in Esher, but the sod was too quick for me.”

“Careless Joe, how did he get the better of you? What happened?”

“He went into the house, I parked a bit down the street, you know to avoid attention like, but before I could grab him he came running out of the house and took off in the Morris. I followed him back to where he works and nearly got collared by the police in the university car park, they seemed to be waiting for him.
