Chapter Eight
I teeter under the weight of the book bag I'm lugging with me. These are all the books I found in the library about curses. I've spent a couple more mornings with Theo to find out more about his curse. It turns out, he doesn't know a lot about it, though. Which is frustrating to say the least. So I've done as much research as possible into what's going on. The only thing I won't suggest is a kiss.
"Theo?" I call as I push through the trees and into the clearing which surrounds the lake. Everything is as peaceful as ever, though the darkening sun gives the place an eerie glow I'm not so keen on.
"Marigold?" he says back. "I'd given up on thinking you were coming today." His tone holds an accusation.
I scowl, but don't mention it. If I'd been trapped in a frog's body for this long, then I'd probably be impatient to find a way out of it. No matter who it annoyed.
"Sorry, I couldn't get away before now." I set the bag down on the rock, then sit myself down and pull off my shoes and stockings. I drop them next to my bag, then dip my feet into the lake.
I may be here to help Theo, and that's what I plan to do, but it doesn't mean I can't make the most of being here too. The feel of the water through my toes isn't one anything can compare to. I love it.
"They must be working you hard at the academy," the frog says.
I chuckle. "You can say that. I asked to be put in a politics class a little while ago, and it's been hard going. There's so much I don't know about the way the kingdoms work, and I can't believe I've been so blind to so much of it."
"That's always the case," he says, settling himself next to me. "Politics can be rather confusing, especially to people who don't understand it."
"I'm making progress, though," I counter, a little bitter at his insinuation that I don't understand.
"Have you figured out how to break my curse?" he demands.
Ah. I see. We're not going to be making small talk today then. I suppose that's to be expected when he's in a mood like this one. A small part of me wants to grab my bag of books and head straight back up to the academy where my friends are all having fun at a ball. I don't know why I thought it was a good idea to come talk to a frog while they do that. Especially when he's not grateful for my company.
"No. I'm sorry, I've looked up everything I possibly can on curses, but nothing seems to explain what you're going through." I didn't find anything on curses which turned people into animals at all, which is weird. I'd have thought they'd have been common enough for at least a book about past cases to exist. Even if it's one to put people off angering witches.
