CHAPTER FORTY FOUR

Ed Borenko’s scrutinizing gaze remained on the intruder. Josh Jamieson had managed to get himself inside the prison, without an invite, and Ed wanted an explanation. One he was prepared to believe. From where he stood, Josh had a lot of explaining to do and he wasn’t going anywhere until Ed was one hundred percent sure what he’d told him was the truth.

For all he knew, Josh could be one of the Alpha’s henchmen, or a more terrifying conclusion, a closet werewolf hiding amongst them waiting to let the other wolves in when they arrived. The thought turned his blood to ice. Why had Josh been hiding in the infirmary? What was he planning to do in here? Ed wished he’d brought a weapon. He didn’t trust Jamieson one bit.

“So answer the friggin’ question. How did you gain entry? And don’t try givin’ me any cock and bull story, because I’ll know.” Ed folded his arms above his pot belly.

Josh reached into a pocket of his jacket, and the older man recoiled, expecting him to pull a pistol. The detective sighed. “I don’t have a weapon, if that’s what you’re thinking. I’m getting these.” He tossed his jacket onto the gurney and held up a wad of keys. “Funny what you can acquire when you know who to ask.”

“What are they for?” Ed frowned at the tangle of keys.

The detective rolled his eyes. “Are you kidding? They’re keys for this place. That’s how I got in.”

Ed marched over and snatched the keys out of Josh’s hand. “You mean to tell me you’ve had a set of keys for this place all along.”

Josh gave him an indignant glare. “No. I collected them yesterday.”

“How do I know that?” Ed pocketed the keys.
