We had Mafia distributors. In Manhattan and most of New York the Mafia controlled magazine distribution. Everybody paid them off, even Time magazine would have an added fee; they didn’t call it payoff, but they’d call it, like, “security fee” or something. East Village Other, for a while, wouldn’t go with these distributors, so they [the Mafia] would take the East Village Others and run their razor blades through the copies and throw them in mud puddles and stuff. So I talked to Allan Katzman and he said, “Well, yeah, we’ll have to switch over.”

These guys, the Mafia guys that I dealt with in New York, were just street-level, working-class Italian guys whose job it was to distribute papers—it wasn’t glamorous. What I liked about those guys … we never even signed agreements, their words were good. That’s how they did business, that old-fashioned way. I thought it was a pretty clean and good process.
