Chapter Thirteen

Dylan grabbed Andrew’s arm. “There’s one of Bumani’s men. I know him from the hospital. Let me go talk to him, and you run back up.”

Andrew nodded and circled around the lounge.

Dylan crossed the large foyer and went into the lounge, making note of the three exits and four people sitting at various tables. Agency training made it a habit that he hardly thought about anymore. He sat down next to David and ordered a club soda from the bar tender. “Hello, David. Where’s Elizabeth?”

David glanced at him sideways. Sweat was dotting his forehead and he looked very pale. “She’s with Bumani. I tried to get to her, but they’re heavily guarded.” He took his napkin and blotted the sweat from his upper lip.

“What’s wrong? Are you sick?”

“I’m infected with Tracin,” David said, his voice devoid of emotion.

Dylan steeled himself not to back away from him. “When? How did this happen?”

David took a long drink. “Bumani thought he recognized Elizabeth at the prison helping you escape. He knew if it was her that I had somehow helped you. He used me as his guinea pig in your place.” David looked at Dylan, then silently held out his hands, which were deeply bruised. “The rest of my body looks the same,” he said. “Bumani only stopped torturing me when I broke.” His voice started to tremble. “I admitted that it was Elizabeth who had helped you escape.” He bowed his head, obviously ashamed. “He was so angry when he realized Elizabeth had betrayed him. I need to warn her that he knows.” He closed his eyes. “I never should have let her go to you.”

Dylan’s mind was racing. His suspicions were correct–Bumani had Elizabeth and knew she had betrayed him. He had to get her out of there immediately before she was killed. “How are you planning to warn Elizabeth?” he asked urgently.

“We have a pre-arranged check in time which is in half an hour,” David murmured. “We have earpiece communication.” He slowly opened his wounded hand to show Dylan the small earpiece.

“Are you contagious?” Dylan asked. “Shouldn’t we try to get you off this ship?”

“Apparently I become contagious 24 hours after infection,” David explained. “Once the virus is introduced to a host it matures in 24 hours and then is able to be passed to others. Death to the carrier is certain soon after it becomes contagious. I’ve got an hour left.” He swirled the ice cubes around in his drink. “The feelings Elizabeth has for you put us all in danger and may get her killed. If you just could have left her alone to do her job . . .”

Dylan leaned over the bar. “I’m going to get her out of this. I need you to trust me.”

“You don’t even know what you’re really dealing with,” David almost sneered. He leaned close to Dylan. “Bumani is going to deliver Tracin to the United States and plans to infect an entire city. When they become contagious it will spread across the United States like wildfire.
