CHAPTER 16

As soon as Jane arrived home she rang Michael.

“Miss Harrison said she might paint another picture of my dragon,” she told him. “And she said she might show you her paintings if you come over with me next week.”

“That’s a lot of mights,” said Michael.

“That’s the way Miss Harrison speaks. She speaks in mights.” Jane paused, then added, “But I think it’s pretty certain. I think she’ll show you the paintings if you come.”

“Did she show you any more pictures?”

“No. But she showed me something else. She has a library and it’s full of books like your South American book. It’s wonderful.”

“Oh,” said Michael, flatly.

“You don’t sound very excited.”

“It’s just that everything seems to happen when I’m not there. I don’t think Miss Harrison likes me much.”

“She’s just nervous of boys, that’s all. I told her about your book and she was interested.”

“I could bring it over to show her,” said Michael, brightening.

“I think she’d like that.” Jane heard her father open the front door. “I’ve got to go now.”

“Okay. See you tomorrow.” Michael hung up.
