An End

In later years I returned to the old home place, seeking— I know not what.

I could say I sought the solace of closure – to put a period to the absolute darkest chapter of my life. Mainly I believe I sought retribution in those days for I burned with a scarlet desire for revenge. The faces of my brothers, my sisters and my parents hovered always before the lids of my closed eyes – their faltering images conjuring both fear and a melancholy whose depths cannot be measured.

In the darkest nights I sought the spoor of the creatures of those dark woods, running to ground any odd disappearance or rumor. I never allowed myself to be without fire or the means to manufacture it. But all came to no avail, as I discovered no single trace of them for all my scrutiny.

The backward people of that place were of no help at all. In their eyes I had become an outsider. They wished to recall neither my family nor myself. Nor did they wish to speak a word of their own experiences – of wintery nights and flying blizzards, when even the trees shivered their timbers.

I never married nor spawned any offspring. I had seen the grief suffered by my parents and wished no part of it. Dearest Megan! Sweet Shelly! Jack… John… your faces – gods! I cannot bear to think on it any longer.

At some point I lost the bravery of my dare-devil youth, and left that place – never to return.

Now I daren’t come too close to any window, especially after nightfall – and mother’s lamp is never far from my side. I feel safe only in the brightest light of day and have had to move to the Keys, for now I cannot stand the cold - nor the sight of flying, wind-driven snow.
