The champagne tasted like ash, but I sipped it anyway, maintaining the facade. Three months since that night. Three months of constant pain that I’d learned to compartmentalize into background noise. The formal function with allied packs required my presence, and I’d be damned if anyone saw weakness in their king.

I’d positioned myself strategically near the massive windows overlooking the city - close enough to observe everything while avoiding tedious small talk. My reflection in the glass showed what the bond had cost me: sharp cheekbones more pronounced from weight loss, shadows under my eyes that no amount of sleep could cure. But my posture remained perfect, my presence still commanding. No omega would bring the Lycan King to his knees, mate bond or not.

Camden hovered nearby, pretending to engage with other pack representatives while keeping me in his peripheral vision. He’d learned not to comment directly on my condition, but his concern radiated through our pack bond. I ignored it, focusing instead on the room’s dynamics.

Phillip and Fiona Wensworth worked the crowd with their usual calculated charm. Father and daughter moved in practiced synchronization, spreading whatever lies or scenarios they had concocted in their delusional minds.

But something in their performance seemed off. A tension that spoke of genuine frustration rather than smooth political maneuvering. Interesting.

I shifted slightly, angling myself to better observe them while appearing to study the city lights. My enhanced hearing, one of the benefits of my alpha status, picked up fragments of conversation from across the room. Most of it was meaningless social noise, but then...

Phillip and Fiona had moved to the balcony doors, clearly thinking they were being discreet. But Fiona’s hissed words carried on the night air.

“...three months and still nothing. She blocked everything - phone, email, even the emergency contacts.”

Phillip’s response was equally angry, though he kept his voice lower. “That ungrateful bitch ruined years of planning. Do you have any idea how much I invested in her training?”

My eyes narrowed, though I kept my expression neutral. Why would Phillip be angry about losing contact with a successful spy?

“She was supposed to stay close, stay useful. Now we have nothing,” Fiona complained, her voice rising slightly before Phillip shushed her.

“All that training, all that money wasted because she got emotional.” The disgust in Phillip’s voice was palpable. “I should have known better than to trust an omega with something this important.”

“If you’d just told her the truth from the beginning-” Fiona started before Phillip cut her off with a sharp gesture.

“We’ll find her eventually. She can’t hide forever, not with her mother’s condition.”

They moved away from the doors, returning to their political games, but I remained frozen in place, mind racing. The conversation didn’t fit the narrative of a successful intelligence operation. It sounded more like... a failed one.

I continued my observation for the next hour, watching Phillip work the room. He played the concerned father publicly - worried about his wayward daughter, hoping she was safe wherever she’d run off to.
