He yanked the headphones off, then fumbled to stop the video, clenching his teeth hard against the wave of nausea. He pushed the chair back and knelt on the floor, counting his breaths. In and out. In and out. Until he felt like he could open his eyes without fainting, or worse, crying.

His vision swam white when the light hit his pupils and he blinked rapidly before crawling from under the desk, hands twitching like he was on two kilos of undiluted sugar.

He knew what he needed: he needed to run. He couldn't run from this, but... Or maybe he could? He glanced at the computer, hesitating; what if the answer was there? What if there was a way not to... conceive at all? But if there was, wouldn't Ari have said it first? His friend had been helping Cole prep school work since he'd almost failed his GCSEs. Cole had only agreed to do A levels when both Ari and TJ had promised to record summaries of material for him—they'd let him record teachers in year 10, but it wasn't like he had six hours every day after school to listen to them, or like he could record his own summaries while he listened—so he trusted their instincts. But maybe...

He took his phone from his desk, almost pressed 'record' and then went for 'transcribe' instead. It wasn't perfect and it had some issues with his accent sometimes, but he didn't want them to hear the strain in his voice and whatever came out would be better than his spelling for sure.

He squinted at it, but he was too wound up for this. He pressed 'send'.

11:56 TJay [Ari is still reading through it, but so far there's nothing about that... But we're getting more books from the First Alpha's wife this afternoon!]

TJ was trying his best to sound cheerful, but he couldn't quite hide his nerves. Cole couldn't blame him, after all—TJ was a great student but it wasn't often than someone's life depended on his research skills. And if what they'd found out so far was true... that was what was at stake.

He put the phone down and undressed down to his trousers. It was daylight so he wanted more than underwear, even if all his neighbours were werewolves too and therefore cool with casual nudity. He went into the trees still dressed and stashed his clothes in the hole between two trees—he wasn't so sure he was cool with casual nudity anymore.

And then he let the wolf have free reign, not simply guide his steps but step for him. Cole was just a passenger in his own body, just instinct, just need. The wolf ate—because Cole had skipped breakfast—and marked its territory and then finally stopped by the lake for a drink.

It was the same lake they'd camped by. And it hadn't been long enough for the scents to fade completely yet, not even outside, and because smell was Cole's dominant sense in this form, he was immediately brought back to that night.
