I let myself in to Damien’s house with both arms full of groceries. He didn’t have much in the kitchen to begin with, but I wanted to make sure that the basics he did have would be easy for him to access with only one hand. That included new flip-top bottles of ketchup and mayo and a bag of boiled eggs that had already been peeled.

Damien mentioned liking hard boiled eggs, but if he had to peel one by himself, the poor man would starve.

I gently kicked the door closed behind me and looked into the empty house. “I’m back.”

“In here.” Damien’s deep voice soothed some of the anxiety inside me, and I was surprised to find him standing in the kitchen. “I was just making some soup.”

I walked inside and stood in front of the kitchen table with my jaw hanging open. “Wow.”

Damien actually looked proud of himself for what he had accomplished, but I was still trying to take in the fall scene.

An entire loaf of bread was scattered across the counter and three cans of chicken noodle soup were in various forms of manglement next to the stove. “Um, how did you get those open?” I hadn’t noticed an electric can opener, but it was possible he’d had one hidden in a drawer.

“I went old school.” Damien held up a metal church key can opener with the pointy side aimed in my direction. “The hole isn’t big enough to get the noodles out, but I got enough broth out that I think we can each have a bowl.”

I tried not to laugh, but he was too fucking adorable to hold it in. “Good job, alpha.” I reached for one of the soup cans and felt about a pound of noodles sitting at the bottom. “But I can get these noodles out for us.” There was a standard can opener on the counter so I picked it up and cut off the top of the can. “This will be delicious.”

Damien huffed out a sigh but didn’t complain. He probably didn’t want to eat only broth and toast when there were so many delicious noodles trapped in a can. The man was stubborn, but he wasn’t dumb. “Yeah, fine.”

While Damien finished warming up the soup, I unloaded the groceries and found a zippered storage bag to keep the rest of the bread in. I hadn’t thought about a twist tie being difficult to manage with one hand, but it looked like he used his teeth to tear open the bread bag. And judging by his mood when I left the house earlier, I had to assume that was exactly how he got it done.

Once the soup was finished, Damien and I sat down at the table and started to eat. The walls I felt him erecting earlier seemed to be down as we joked around and hinted about his next sponge bath. The day had a few rocky moments but everything was going great and I was convinced my bad luck had run out.
