“Well, if it’s not the talk of the pack.”

“Good morning, Michele. Did you have a nice weekend?”

“I had an expensive weekend,” she said, “but one far less playful than yours.”

“Lose your dress at the roulette wheel?” I asked.

“That was Donald,” she replied. “Mine was at the craps table.”

I snorted. “I bet he looks good in a dress. You know, Michele, the wolves would absolutely love if you played more with them.”

“So you think I’d look cute in a collar?”

“I think I am well rewarded for being willing to let go with them.”

She paused and then dropped her tone a little. “I’m not very good at that,” she admitted.

“You could learn.”

“It’s been twenty-five years,” she said. “It was twenty-five years ago that I caught Donald shifting into his fur.”

“I bet that was a shock.”

“It was,” she said. “Twenty-five years of habits. Do you know what it takes to raise werewolves, Bree?”

“Tell me.”

“It’s wonderful, but you can’t drop your guard for a minute, not one minute, or they will run all over you. Donald...” She broke off. “Donald is a wonderful man, and we have as good a marriage as I could ever have hoped. But if it weren’t for me, it would have been my mother-in-law raising Donald’s children.”

“If it weren’t for you, Donald wouldn’t have had children.”

“Do you not know what I mean?”

“Donald seems rather passive for a wolf.”

“Maybe that’s my fault,” she said. “I’m anything but passive.”

“I don’t think it’s about fault, Michele.”

“No,” she said. “I suppose not. But I have a point.”

“I get it, Michele. But why does everything have to be about who is dominant and who is submissive? Zoe’s not remotely submissive.”

“Zoe is able to find a blend that works for her,” Michele replied. “But her situation is distinctly different from mine, and I’m not her.”

“Fine, but why does it have to be about this? It’s just play.”

“Bree, everything the wolves do is about dominance. I am able to stay outside that most of the time, but that’s partly because I don’t set myself up.”

“Omega,” I said.

“How is that working for you?” she asked.

“I’d say it’s working great.”

“For you,” she said. “Yes. But I couldn’t accept the role you play. I wouldn’t be at all amused if anyone called me a pet human.”

“Do you fault me for joining them?”

“Absolutely not,” she said. “You and I are not the same people. Do you fault me for not playing?”

“I think you’re missing out, but I guess I understand, and now perhaps better than I did.” I smiled. “What are we working on today?”

“Ready to go?”

I looked up from my desk. Michaela was standing in the doorway to my office. She was wearing a long, black skirt with a long, coral peasant blouse, belted with a shiny metal belt. We smiled at each other. Michaela stepped into my office and closed the door.

“Are you wearing it?” I asked. She nodded. “Has Lara found it?”

“No, but only because I told her to keep her hands to herself for a while.
