A Modern Paddler’s Perspective

Bill Layman is a devoted wilderness canoeist who lives in northern Saskatchewan. Fifteen years ago, he paddled out of Brochet for the first time, following the old way north to Nueltin Lake and beyond. He was hooked. He has returned to that same country, together with his partner, Lynda Holland, on several occasions since. Nearly every summer brings them back. In the beginning, he said, “I met the Cree, and they shared their stories with me. Later the Dene, and then the Inuit, did the same. Tied through bloodlines to the rhythms of the land, they were glad to talk to us about our trips. To them Lynda and I will be eternally grateful.” His canoe trips in the land of the little sticks and out onto the barrenlands have prompted a thirst for a knowledge of those who went before: Cree, Dene, trappers and traders, early explorers and adventurers. “Without early travelers like Oberholtzer and Magee,” said Layman, “the vibrancy of this region would be lost to those of us who follow, seeking our own adventures and hearing the echoes of those who have preceded us.” Perhaps no modern-day paddler knows this route so well as Bill Layman does.
