We hadn’t been in Vermont very long when it was time for our twentieth annual Christmas party. The guest list had changed over the years, as guest lists tend to do. But now that we’d moved a thousand miles away, most of the list had turned over. There might have been different people, but the themes stayed the same.

First, there is always lots of bad-for-you but delicious party food. No vegetable platters here. I might feel smug while peeling and cutting a big pile of carrots, but they always wind up in the chicken yard the next day. Ours is a festival of debauchery.

Every year, there are tenderloin sandwiches with balsamic onions and Gorgonzola. Sometimes they are nestled against potato boats and beside trays of oysters. A truly decadent mac ’n’ cheese makes an appearance more years than not (page 88).

There might possibly be a little fruit, but it would be accompanied by a dip made from cream cheese and Fluff, so it certainly wouldn’t count as healthy, either. And there is always a cheese ball straight out of my mother’s 1970s kitchen, next to mounds of fudge and thick, chocolatey cookies. Christmas reminds us all of our childhoods, and mine was filled with cholesterol.
